I have heard people pronounce this as "ZEEE-bra" and also as Zebra (ie sssszze-bra).
Which is correct?

Americans say Zeee, and not zed. So it is ZEEbra for me and most Americans. I will always pronounce it that way as that is the way to say Z in this country.
BTW- I've heard somer funky pronunciations for Tanzania too in my day.
I call it: TAN-zan-ia
I've heard some call it tan-ZANIA, with it sounding like MANIA! Makes me cringe when I hear that.

Watch some early American safari films. The pronounciation of zebra is as in "zed" ze-bra.
I wonder when the pronounciation changed.
Tanzania is a good one too. The combination of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
I say it - Tanz-a-Nia. This looks similar to how you pronounce the word.
Then your other option of Tan-ZAN-ia.
It could be said - Tan-zania - which is probably a better fit of the two original words.

Yep, when I say it I emphasize "TAN". Probably those early movies had English directors or something! Even as a wee one we were taught "Zeee". Perhaps someone else will come up with a better story!

Even the locals are not consistent as to how they pronounce Tanzania. It's Tanz-a-Nee-a to me.
If it hadn't been mimiced sine childhood as Zee-bra, it would make more sense to pronounce it Zeb-ra, as what seems the way the locals pronounce it. But that applies to alot of American pronuciatiions.
I have given up trying to mimic the locals, here and in Africa.
The state of Missouri is pronounced Miz-zur-a or Miz-zur-ee depending on where to are from. An adjacent county to me is spelled Miami, but is pronounced Mi-am-a.
Take your pick. I tell guys that get offended by the way I pronounce their names or places, that if they wanted them pronounced that way they should have spelled that way.
I am so loved.

Another one is DAGGABOY! DAGGA being MUD, and Boy is self explanitory (MUD BOY)! The way it is spelled is not the way it is pronounced in Zimbabwe. They pronounce it DUGGABOY, and is the reason so many Amreicans misspell it. They say it right, just misspell it!
Some of the names in South Africa are impossible to pronounce from their spelling. One example is the sir name "UYS"! It is pronounced "ACE" like the playing card.

Now Mac you've been smoking again.
I've seen this discussion before and 'dagga' is marijuana, weed, malawi cob, whatever you want to call it.
I think Alf in his definitive way summed it up and decreed 'duga' with one 'G' as being the derivative of mud. As in your alias 'DUGABOY' or 'mud-boy'.
As for pronounciation I've heard it pronounced both as 'dagga' and 'dugga'.
Mr Ron Berry used to call himself 'DaggaRon' or 'druggie-ron'. Now he just calls himself 'rest-in-peace'.
