Rem 700 416 Mag Dump Question
      #57849 - 27/05/06 02:50 AM

I was finally able to take my new 700 Big Game Syn rifle out for a shoot yesterday. As instructed by many I loaded the mag full when I was shooting. All was fine with 75grns of RE15 and a 350grn Barnes but when I went to the full load of 85grns of RE15 all hell broke loose. The gun shot great and then I saw 3 rounds tumbling on to the ground. With the 85grn loads it did it every time. Short of welding my mag box closed any ideas on how to modify this problem? Best solution would be to find someone who has an off the self drop in mag bottom and catch. The rifle isn't a KS model and is a special run by remington with a BDL magazine floor plate.

Thanks

Pill Shooter

Most gunsmiths should be able to clear up that problem in under 10 minutes.

FWIW A quick fix in the field can be done by simply wrapping some insulation tape around the rifle at the appropriate spot. - but as Mike says, a riflesmith should be able to fix it within a few minutes.

I had the same problem with one of my rifles and a buddy of mine made me an extended magazine box. He put an allen bolt on the floorplate, which I can undo it for cleaning etc but the rest of the time I just cycle the rounds through the action....... works a treat, and as I spend weeks and sometimes months without unloading my magazine it's the perfect solution for me........

Here's what I would do:

Order a new steel triggerguard/floorplate assembly from Sunny Hill Enterprises for your Model 700. These aren't cheap, but they are of the highest quality, and they won't come open under recoil.

www.sunny-hill.com

Take you rifle to a good gunsmith and have him inlet the stock for the new part, and finish to match the rest of the metalwork.

Factory rifles in dangerous game calibers generally do not become true dangerous game RIFLES without some work.........
