500 3 1/4 ballistics
      #57623 - 23/05/06 06:24 AM

Hello all. I am planning on builidng a DR on a shotgun action in the not to distant future. I am trying to figure out what caliber to go with. I hae been considering the 500 3 1/4 what are its ballistics and pressure like?

Anyone have any other suggestions? Or suggestions on what action to use or where to fnd it? Thanks.

If you do a search you will find some intersting stuff. Most important will probably be the titles of a couple of books on building DR's on shotgun actions.

500 Grains has shot a fair number of elephants with his 500NE which I believe is a 3" - the standard.

570 grains at 2150fps is the factory ballistics. I beleive the ballistics of the 3" and the much less common 3 1/4" are the same. I have not shot one but, reportedly, the recoil is stout.

That extra quarter-inch of case length will likely cause you no end of grief when it comes to sourcing cheap brass, for no gain that I can see. It was a useful case-length when extra space for black-powder meant improved ballistics, but those days are long gone. So is the requirement for the 3 1/4 inch case IMHO.

The .500 3" NE and the .500 3 1/4" NE were loaded the same - 80 grains Cordite and a 570 grain bullet - the 3 1/4" was not given a larger charge. The longer case simply reduced pressure and velocity. The 3" was 2150 fps for 16 tons, and the 3 1/4" was 2100 or 2125 fps (I can't remember which) for 15.5 tons. The reduction in pressure isn't worth the effort of finding brass.
