Well, a hospital stay did in my Mahenge N buffalo hunt funds. I am now contemplating a cow hunt in Zim or anywhere else that's not too expensive.
I have two reasons for this post:
1. Where would you go and why?
2. I have several choices in rifles and would like input. Calibers considered are 9,3X62, 375 H&H, 375 Wby, 458 Win. My new CZ 550 American in 416 Rigby is up for sale, NIB.
I've used 9,3X74R, 375 H&H and 416 Rigby for buffalo bulls in past hunts; the Rigby stood head and shoulders above the others.
This being said, I tend toward my nice compact Mauser in 458 Win as my best choice...? Properly loaded, the 458 seems to be just about right.

How about an NT water buffalo cull?
There still may be opportunities for them.
All of the rifles you list sound fine.

Maybe this isn't the case everywhere or with every concession holder, but the buff cow quota was reserved for those hunting lion or leopard, or so I was told.
I think your 458wm would make a perfect buff rifle. It worked really well for me.

I have always liked the .458 win mag. A rifle in that caliber can be compact and handy, it can be made relatively light, and the recoil is fairly mild. For cow buff, that would be a fun gun to use.

I paid a fairly minimal daily fee seeing no proper camp had been setup last year. There was a hot fire heated shower setup and a long drop facility. George cooked on an open fire and would not let me help and the food was fine. Bed was open air under a tree. By 2006 they intended to have a proper tented camp setup. Cow trophy price was fairly low per animal too, seeing they wanted two hundred shot. Maybe only 50 were shot in 2005 to my knowledge. Trophy pigs had a higher trphy fee as they are somewhat limited. The scrub bull I paid a normal trophy fee for if I remember. Horses and donkeys were free.
I believe a higher price was to apply in 2006 and also proper buffalo trophy hunts were to be started.
I will PM you.

Charles, Thanks...! I am getting so I can feel my right toes, a good sign.
As to which rifle, the 458 is very light and compact, and as I am getting heavier and not at all compact in later years, it is nice to compensate...
John...it is a an attractive alternative, and I'll consider it. A lot of walking may not be in the cards, though. Frustration is now a cold enemy...

You do not do a lot of walking on the cull hunts, because if you do, you will not get a lot of animals. Walking for a single buff means you miss out on a dozen further down the track.
Sight them.
Jump out.
Blaze away. Reload. Move a bit, or run forward to a better position. Bang away again. And so on, till the smart ones are out of range and the rest are dead.
Generally most of it was in range of the track. Not real hunting, it is why I referred to it as culling. We did do some walking - eg the scrub bull was hunted properly, and a few other times. But definitely different to the trophy buff hunts I did.
