SINGLE SHOT FOR AFRICA
      #57290 - 17/05/06 11:04 PM

I posted a similar question on another site so forgive me if this is redundant. YES Im answer shopping; but Im looking for other points of view.

Im trying to decide on another rifle. The tough part is as always never enough money...... Ive narrowed it down to either a CZ 550 safari magnum or a Ruger No1. I HAVE decided on 375HH. I know thats more than Ill need here in the US; but I keep dreaming about Africa and Leopards.

I dont think a single shot is a DG rifle; but how many shots am I likely to get on leopards over bait? Im perfectly happy with the PH backing me up if necessary. Ive got some experience with No.1's in heavy and lesser rounds so I know their strengths and weaknesses.

I live in Maryland, so most of my (unfortunetly limited), hunting is for whitetail and the occasional trips out of state for wild boar and rare trip for black bear. I picked the 375HH mostly for its ability to be found around the world, in the event I am able to go to far off lands... Here in Maryland its about the only BIGBORE that is on dealer shelves, everything else has to be ordered.

Im limited to about $1000.oo(US). I can get either rifle for about $700. The CZ rep. recommends glassbedding and an action job, and Id like a barrel band swivel for looks and function. With all that Im close to my limit. Im pretty happy with the No1's as they come for the factory. Are there any modifications I should concider?

The CZ has a good reputation and its a traditional Safari design. It has alot of advantages, not the least being more versatile. The No1 is as close as I can afford to those early singles. The No1 is calling me; but Ive made mistakes before.

Help me before I blow the cash on junk......

A bolt action is definitely more versatile but if you don't mind the PH backing you up a single shot would be fine. If Africa isn't in the cards in the next couple years then get the one you want and enjoy it.

But you really don't need a 375 for Leopards. Something along the lines of a 300 win mag would be perfect for the Leo and any plains game you come across.

I don't believe in single shots for dangerous game, but have never hunted any. I did shoot five head of Namibian plains game with five shots from a custom .30-40.

Thanks guys, I still havent decided. This would be so much easier if I was rich insted of good looking.... To make matters worse my dealer tells me the No1 is now available in 9.3x74. I think I still want 375 just because of its world wide availability (including Baltimore); but it is tempting.

Does the No1 need anything done after I purchase it to make it ready. I keep hearing I should glassbed and add crossbolts to the CZ. The factory rep even suggested I might want to have them slick up the action. I know the CZ isnt a custom shop gun; but it bothers me that the manufacturer says to do these things.

What needs to be done on the No1?

EDELWEISS
The Ruger #1's I've owned have shot well out of the box. I'd buy one and shoot it. If it needs to be dressed up or if you find yourself with extra money and nothing to spend it on then dress it up more. Otherwise leave it alone.
I have a 7x57 #1 Mannlicher it shoots well, looks good and kills dead. I like it a lot.
My 458 Tropical I spent extra money on it but she's a beauty.

Edelweiss, with your name you have to pick up a Mod.33 Gebirgsjaegerkarabiner
