From "The Australian Newspaper" December 13, 2003
"An enraged hippopotamus has attacked and killed a newlywed woman on honeymoon in Northern Botswana, while her husband and a guide stood helplessly by. Janice Simpson, 32, and her husband, Bruce, 30, from Cape Town, were on safari in the scenic Okavango Delta when the animal attacked the dugout canoe they were using for a sightseeing trip.
Here's a mean looking bastard from my honeymoon on the Zambezi !

Damn, that was a short marriage!
People take the Hippo to lightly, and many pay the price of thinking of them as big cute pigs. You can blame Disney for the misconception!

Shame! A P.H. friend of mine from South Africa told me that over the years he has had more dangerous encounters with hippos than any other creature.

A new like this is always sad . Sometimes we forget we're treating with true wild animals and they're very dangerous.
This bad guy tryed to get the trackers down. Is incredible to see a 2000 kgs. monster running that fast

But people the photo I posted above is real and while not as close as the enlarged photo looks that hippo was very close, maybe 30 yards or a little more.
We were in a canoe on the Zambezi with the bank behind us and open water beyond the hippo. While very likely the hippo if it moved would have headed to deeper water, if charging we would not have had a chance.
Also the stupid guide did not supply lifevests and my wife can not swim.
Sometimes luck or lack of it plays a big part.

You were very brave to put that stick in his mouth to keep him from chomping you.
