My 416 Rigby is coming together
      #56652 - 09/05/06 02:50 AM

After a lot of planning and discussing things with my friend Frikkie, who is also the smith building my rifle, I started buying all the components.

I got a double square bridge action ( it was made in RSA) and the stock blank is Turkish Wallnut. It is being cut out now and the inlets are made for the action. The barrel will be ordered next week and then it will take about 3 - 4 months before I get it.

I prefer a heavy rifle somewhere between 10 and 11 lbs.

We will put a quater rib on the rifle as well.

A couple of questions.
I am thinking of putting express sights and a scope with quick releases on the rifle. My concern is: I am unfortuneately getting older and my arms are way to short for reading without glasses. I have noticed that the rear sight on rifles starts blurring when I aim it, which basicly dictates that I will have to use a scope. I am looking at Leupold scope, VX111 1.75x5x20, VX111x4x20, VX11 2x7x33 VX111 2.5x8x36. The 1x4 x20 have a very short eye relief that basically rules it out. Wiil the 33 and 36 tubes give you so much more light that it outweights it higher low magnification. My idea is to have as small as possible lower magnification to increase my field of view, any comments on this.

I will also install a recoil reducer in the stock. Two types are available in RSA, the mercury ones and the tungsten bead. Which one is the best and why. I do not know the tungston bead ones at all and please correct me if I am wrong, to my knowledge they work with a couple of tungston washers and springs.

The engraving and the checkering will be decided on after the stock is finished. I believe checkering and engraving must compliment the wood. So that part will have to wait a bit.

Anybody with suggestions? It is the first time that I tackle a project like this. I will do most of the work under the guidance of Frikkie.

Hi Skeetshooter1,
Somewhere we must be family. According to my information only 1 a certain Johann Human(n) arrived in South Africa from Solingen in Germany in 1703. All Humans are decendants of him. I am the ninth decendant of him in our branch of the family.

My suggestions are:

No scope.

21" barrel (a long barrel is really not necessary unless you like them).

Barrel band sling swivel.

Banded ramp front sight.

Trigger set to 3 pounds.

Obendorf style bolt handle (straight drop, no sweep).

Sounds like a cool project.

Is there a reason why you didn't include the VX-3 1.75-6X32? I just bought one and also a VX-3 2.5-8x36. I have not mounted either of them yet but they seem like great scopes. Personally I would choose the 1.75-6x32 for this rifle. I bet you could mount it as low as any 20mm objective scope and it would give you a little more magnification for longer shots that may come up as well as more light gathering ability.

The 1.75-6x32 on good QD mounts would be great on this rifle in my mind.

500 grs mentioned not scoping this rifle. I also really like purpose built unscoped big bores. It really would depend on what I wanted to use the rifle for whther I scoped it or not.

Another vote for no scope. If you however want to scope it, rather use a Schmidt & bender or a Swarovski 1.25-4 X24 scope

Bulldog 563,
My mistake it should be the VX 3 - 1.75x6x32

Ndumo
I have looked at the Swarovski and Schmidt& Bender scopes, but at almost 3 times the price of a Leupold I cannot see that I will get such a huge benefit in their performance espesially if you hunt up close. I also prefer not to stretch my hunting times to the limits. If anything goes wrong and you must follow up an animal in the dark, you might lose it. I prefer to shoot my last shot at about a half hour to a hour before sunset

I will also prefer not to scope the rifle. My problem is that I must wear reading glasses, for the rest my eye sight is good. When I aim with open sights the rear sight gets (at the moment) slightly blurred and I fear it will worsen over time. I do not feel comfortable with this sight blurring. I supose I will have to start doing things the way my eyes are dictating.

Any thought on the recoil reducers?

Hi Jaco

I have no experience with the other recoil reducer you mentioned, but know from experience that the mercury ones work. I personally do not like them, as the stock of your rifle sounds like a Milky Bar! On the rear sights being blurry, it is impossible to focus on both sights, as well as the target. I found it works quite well when focussing on the front bead only, after acquiering the target. The target is then still slightly in focus, but the rear sight not. If it really troubles you, go for a ghostring back sight.

Jaco:

Since you're having this rifle built, why not use a quarter rib that is long enough to get the rear V well away from the eye. That should help some with the presbyopia. In conjuction with this, stay away from short barrels - stick with 24" at least. Quarter ribs on bolt rifles are almost always too short.

The sloshing of mercury reducers drives me nuts. At 10 to 11lbs, a .416 should be fine without one.

I've ordered my barrel yesterday.

It wiil be 22" long and the forend will me 22 mm.
It will be profiled like a magnum barrel and a barrel band for the front sight. Now I have 3 to 4 months of waiting.

In the meantime I will recondition the Stevens S/S shotgun I got from a friend that emigrated to NZ.

I've had both mercury tube and a tungsten bead recoil arrestors in different rifles and both worked well. The rifle I have at the moment for my personal use (500 Jeffery) and the one I'm just buying for a company loaner (.404 Jeffery) both have mercury tubes in them. Not only do they reduce felt recoil but they also make for a faster reload if necessary.

Would you say that the Tungsten reducers are as effective as a similar sized mercury reducer?

I have similar vision problems with open sights and have switched over to a large peep instead of an express site.
If your rifle position/cheekweld remains simlar this is very accurate and you effectively only see the front sight with practice.I believe this was discussed in a previous thread.

I don't use recoil reducers, just don't like the feel of the gun with them.

"Would you say that the Tungsten reducers are as effective as a similar sized mercury reducer? "

Yes, much the same. The tungsten bead one I had was made by Blaser and the mercury ones are made by (Sabi Rifles) the rifle buider.

FWIW I hunted a couple of years ago with a client & friend who had a .458 Lott built (if I remember rightly) by Dakota and it had 3 mercury tubes fitted..... he used to shoot full loads off sticks with that rifle single handed.......

Thanks to all for the input. It helped to organise my own ideas. I'll post photos once the project starts. Any further ideas are more than welcome.

Shakari,

You mentioned Tungsten bead reducers... is this the only type of Tungsten reducer? The only type of Tungsten reducer I have heard of has a Tungsten donut on a rod with springs used to absorb recoil. I know it is a bad explanation but is this the same as the bead reducer?

I think it's different. The one I was referring to is the one made by Blaser for their rifles. I've never taken one apart but it looks similar to a cigarette packet but slightly smaller and it drops into the stock and is held in by screws. When you shake the rifle you can just hear the beads moving around. My guess is that it's just partially filled with the beads and doesn't have springs or counterbalances etc....... seems to work very well though..........

i would go a peepsight, but the classic safari sight is fine, the leupold 1,5-5x2 is a classic, but european optic is also good, there is the Czech Meopta, they have a 1,5-5x20 and I.O.R

they are rumanian scopemanufacturer that has made them together with help from Zeiss and Leica, they have many fine ones. the Zeiss Conquest is made in Germany , but assembled in USA. they are a good scope at a nice cost.
