BAR in .458?Anyone know of this conversion?
      #56577 - 07/05/06 01:21 PM

Yes,I know they exist as I owned one back in the Eighties and regret selling it,though it would hang up now and then(guess thats why I sold it) But,now I want to get one converted and I am sure it will make a Helluva Hog Gun here in the Georgia woods! So,does anyone know of any, seen any,or know of some gunsmith doing these? Thanks!

It's not quite as powerfull but would you consider a rifle in .458 SOCOM?

Any competent gunsmith should be able to do the work. The BAR was offered in .338 win mag. The cases are the same for all practical purposes. Another conversion along that line would be to convert a BLR in 7mm mag. to .458. Only recoil junkies need apply!

A pal of mine had a BAR in .458, but IMHO he spec ed the barrel too heavy, and it was not unlike trying to shoot a heavy varmint rifle off hand. Still, the rifle was reliable, accurate, and a hoot to shoot. I probably put 100 rounds through it, and recoil while strong was far from unpleasant...if I recall the trigger was a might squishy - but that's the nature of the beast. It was put together by a Canadian gunsmith who has since retired, but as posted above, the conversion should not be beyond the ability of a competent smith who is familiar with the BAR design.
