Balance Points
      #56316 - 03/05/06 09:51 PM

Ok, while I was sitting in the hospital last week with my wife and newborn son, I found my mind wandering to DR construction. I've been working on getting barrel profiles better. This definately gives the DR a better feel. However I haven't been paying to much attention to balance points till something my father-in-law said in the hospital. So my question is where is the point of balance(POB) on most DR's? In shotguns it seems like most english guns are built with the POB using the front trigger as reference. It also seems that most Germanic guns use the breech face as their reference for POB. So does anyone have any basic "rules" that the fine makers use? Also If anyone is willing I'd like to hear from those of you with multiple guns if there sems to be any concensus on POB.

Thanks again,

Bill

Congratulations on the birth of your child!

Good stuff there no doubt, I've been having a great time with our little ten month old critter.

Balance point?
Think 'between the hands' and note that's different with each shooter. How do you (or whoever is getting the gun) handle the rifle? Get the balance point right there in between the hands of the shooter and you're likely to please them with the balance of the gun.
Both of my centerfire double rifles balance ahead of the pivot pin and handle very nicely. One is British from the 1880's and the other is Belgian from the late 1930's

I think the balance is supposed to be +- an inch in front of the hinge pin.

Ok perhaps a little more to get those with DR's to do a little measuring. In Germanic (perhaps most continental?) guns they use the breech face and the distance is 55-60 mm forward. In most of the english guns I've got to check the POB has been about 4 1/2" in front of the front trigger (about 5" on a single trigger gun). The problem is that these are all sxs shotguns. I wanted to know how that compared to DR's.

Obviously people like slightly different POB because the distance between their hands makes it feel differently for different people. Then most target (pigeon) guns have a little more weight toward the barrels where many game guns have the weight back a little further. However what I'm looking for is if there is some consensus on distance for POB or a small range. That gives that "right" feeling when you handle them.

SDH - a member here - has written about this subject in detail.

Perhaps he will give his summary.

You have any links to SDH's writing on balance. Is an interesting subject to me. And doing a search under the username SDH didn't turn up anything.

I don't think he has anything published online.

I was referring to his book “Fine Gunmaking, Double Shotguns” by Steven Dodd Hughes.

I’m sure it’s available from Amazon. It’s a great book, well done and will give you a great deal of insight into answering this very question.

I have that book. Problem is it's shotguns. I was wondering how it hold for DR's. Or did I miss something in the book?
