Extra Sets of Barrels?
      #55962 - 28/04/06 10:11 AM

For a double rifle, are extra barrel sets practical? For example, a .375 Flanged with a barrel set in .450/400. Doesn't this make more financial sense than a whole other rifle? Or, does it throw the balance/handling off? Thanks for any info.

I own a 470 NE with a set of 7x65R and a set of 9.3x74R.
I love the set up. They swing fine and shoulder well. Other than the fact that the gun is heavy in the lighter calibers I love it.

Not enough difference between a 450/400 and 375 Flanged to warrant the expense of different barrels, IMO.

A set of shotgun barrels might make more sense for the traveling sportsman.

I'm not in love with Kreighoffs but Foxfire has a rifle that will travel anywhere and have an option that is close to ideal. Throw in a set of shotgun barrels and nothing can't be hunted. One issue though is that if you have your heavy rifle set up you can't also have your light rifle and vice versa.

Makes a lot of sense if the second or third set of barrels work well (ie balance etc) and are complementary calibres. Only need to carry a set of extra barrels, plus maybe an extra scope, and the other ammo.

I wouldn't bother with a .400 and a .375, but a .400 plus a medium set of scoped barrels might make sense. Plus a shotgun.

I'm still trying to decide if a set of shotgun barrels is in my future. I know it would be an ideal thing to do. I would certainly shoot the gun more often.
But would that open my gun up to other problems. Meaning most double rifle owners I believe shoot their guns occasionally. By adding shotgun barrels I might shoot the gun a lot more often. Does that lend itself to loosening up the action? Maybe having the gun come "off face" sooner than it might have normally.
If the gun is set up to shoot 470 NE's I would think 20 gauge shotgun shells should be no problem to handle, even if shot very often.
I don't know, but I think about buying the shotgun barrels a lot.

Foxfire,

My thinking for what its worth:

The more you handle your gun the more familiar and accustomed to it you will be, even if the weight and ballance change some with different barrels. Surely the Kreighoff cocker/safety will become pure second nature, if it isn't already.

There is only so much shooting anyone can do with heavy recoil, and punching paper gets boring with any calibre. Clay targets are moving and the skeet, sporting and informal targets can be as diverse as you want, takes a whole ot of shooting to get boring, relative to punching paper.

If the issue ever comes up, rejointing a double gun just isn't a big deal. It isn't expensive and doesn't take long so it just isn't much to worry about.

Conclussion: Get the barrels if they appeal to you and don't worry about shooting the heck out of your gun in any configuration.

Best,

JPK

My Searcy 470 has an extra set of 12 ga shotgun barrels which were a $4000 extra. The balance is the same and really helps getting used to the gun. This particular gun is for sale.
