There seems to be a lot of interest in the 45-70 caliber these days. With Garrett producing cartridges that give 2000 FPS velosity and produce a ME of 3100 FT/LBS, and the Big 5 having been successfully taken with these cartridges in Africa, what would be WRONG or WRIGHT for a DR in 45-70.

Everyone is invited to participate in this discussion. All I ask is that we take an honest and hard look at the cartridge and voice realistic views and opinions as to a DR in 45-70.

I've got a 45-70 DR but I will not try to run it up to those speeds and pressures. It wasn't designed for it.
I have 3 Siamese Mausers that have had alot of rounds faster than those Garrets. They are designed for them.

Right tool for the right job.........

The higest pressure level on the Garrett loads is 35,000 CUP with some of them as low as 27,000. This dosn't seem all that high to me, but I am no expert.

10 tons of pressure is optimum for DR's from what I undersatnd. 35K is no big deal for a bolt gun but too much for long life/safety in a DR.

Check out the Kynoch Ammunition site. Click on a caliber and get the specs including pressure for most of the NE calibers. No 45-70 listed though.

Here is a quote from one experienced member that says it all:

"The problem is that a 45-70 has anemic velocity when using a 500 grain bullet (1550 fps), which in turn leads to abysmal penetration. The 458 Win Mag with its original loads of 500 grain bullets going 1700 to 1900 fps would not reach an elephant's brain on a frontal shot. There is no reason to expect superior performance by dropping the velocity another 300 fps."

I tried to edit this post but somehow failed. I tried to add that a 45/70 Dr would be great fun to shoot and hunt with, just not DG.

A double rifle in a .45/70 is probably equivalent to a .450 BPE and a fine enough medium sized game rifle at close quarters.

I doubt you could shoot the HOT .45/70 loads in a DR. 2000 fps sounds optimistic to me. And it would only be 400gr or lighter projectiles.
