I see the more knowledgable members all chose the 375Flanged.

mickey,

This comment is off-topic, but I still have the deer-in-the-headlights feeling about the .369 Purdey DR you sold. Wow! That would be my pick. But again, off topic. Sorry.

I see Mickey is trying to influence the vote with his vote rigging comments.

Well I went half-way to the .375 Flanged, so I must be "half-knowledgable". Does being "half-knowledgable" make one a "half-wit"?

***

Actually I never stated any reasons.

Firstly the poll queston mentions "only one double rifle". It does not specify only one rifle. Thereby the double rifle I would choose as I can only have one would be in the .400 to .475 range. I would choose a .450 but I am not allowed to, so I would go for the best all-round cartridge, a .400. I would match this with a .375 in a takedown Mauser 98 and probably a .300 as well.

The .400 reportedly has better knock down characteristics than a .375 and in a single double rifle I am looking for a double that is better for dangerous and big game at close range with adequate knock down capabilities (ie a .450!). But a .400 would also allow some use as a plains game and deer sized rifle as well.

As to the make, if made new and a "standard grade" price I would go for one of these new Heym's in .450/.400 3" that are coming out, setup for claw mounts. Regulated for 410 gr Woodleighs.

If new and no limit to the budget, I have no idea as it is a place I have never considered. The round Scottish actions do seem attractive. I like Purdeys too however. I doubt I would go to much engraving as I would most likely get some rust on it and spoil it.

If a vintage, the best I could find, but I would like a scope on a .400.

I like the 450/400 3 1/4" Nitro Express Magnum.
The 450/400 3" Jeffery is the same ballistically, and its thicker rim is probably better..... But I just like "That impossibly long skinny neck".

Either of the 450/400's are the best all-round double rifle cartridges on the Planet.

You will NEVER go wrong with a 450/400.

Nitro

See that is the difference. You would have a bolt in a 375. A real DR man wouldn't have a bolt to hold up his tent. Since then you would be limited to only one rifle (if you are a DR Man) the 400 would not do.

From Antelope, to Mulies in the desert, to Elk, to Red Deer in Scotland, to Roe Deer in Czech Republic, to Argali in Asia, to anything in Africa up to Elephant.

That is why the 375 flanged is the best choice.

One Gun, One Planet

Hunt with Class, Hunt with Classics.

Who said that?

Mickey
Hmmmmm....

When I get my scoped 450/400 back from JJ....
300 grain bullets for the light stuff, and 400 grain bullets for the big stuff...

We will see how she works out.

Of course since elephants are my main priority, I lean to the larger 400 as my one and only rifle.

I only have one (soon adding a .303) and have only shot two doubles at all ever. My purchase was a Charles Osbourne 450/400 3.25 and I too like the looks of that very long neck. Some time soon I hope to handle and shoot a few other doubles but for now this is the only vote I can cast.

Considering the results of this poll, all the participants should take note of the new offering at Champlins. A Lang .450/.400 3.25" NE that looks to be a nice rifle:

See it here:

LANG 450/400 3 1/4"-DELUXE Gr.

If I had a little money, and if I didn't already own a pretty nice .450/.400 3.25" NE I would be calling Oklahoma.

Best,
Curl

This is a Webley A & W C, probably a 1st, with a Webley serial number on the barrels. The Lang and Webley numbers are both from 1906. Intercepting sears, nice engraving, carved trefoil fences, and Baker extended top strap (very unusual on one of these). Nice rifle. I dunno Curl, it would be the perfect mate to that A & W .450. Better get it quick.

400,

Not for me. The well is dry. Nice rifle for sure. I'd want to see how the re-do looks, though.

Have you handled this rifle?

No, I haven't. George called me last Saturday to discuss the Webley number, which was the first I knew of the rifle. We discussed it at some length and George sent me the photos. He says the redo was high quality. George is fairly critical of such things, so I imagine he's right.

It's an original full nitro. I think the price is in the ball park.

I handled that double a few days ago. It is very nice.
