510 GIBBS Wildcat--Best ALL ROUND 50 big bore??
      #55327 - 20/04/06 06:35 PM

I am thinking of building an open sighted 50 class bolt action together.

Seems the variety of the .510 bullets for the Jeffery/NE are more available than the 505's but the Gibbs has brass with more powder capacity/lower pressure potential for velocity than the Jeffery.

Opening up a 505 Gibbs case mouth to 510 seems no great problem. Thus a 510 Gibbs wildcat seems the best combo----

Any opinions on this wildcat? Any suggestions for obtaining reloading components and the best 505 Gibbs brass for this wildcat?

Thanks for any and all opinions!!

Plan to keep it a while as trying to off load Wildcats can be hard.

Just stick with the Standard 500 J or 505 Gibbs.

IMHO, How many bullet types do you need
and in reality how often will you shoot it for
all the extra expense - dies etc.

Jst my HO.

Much easier to base it on the 460Weatherby ... seems like cases, dies, reamers are much more readily available. Sounds like fun though...

hoppdoc - You're going to put quite a bit of money into getting either the 500 Jeffery or the 505 Gibbs to feed and function correctly.

But after you've gone through all that trouble - that's when a well made 50 becomes valuable.

I'm with 500 on this one.
If you plan on keeping it forever, then go wildcatting.
If you think you might ever want to sell it, then stick with one of the standard chamberings.

It will bring more money and sell more quicky on sale day.

As for bullets, most of the premium makers that make one diameter usually make the other. Cast bullets are easy to get for either.

IMO, I wouldn't let bulled selection be too big of a factor in either one.

Woodleigh makes bullets in both diameters up to 600 gr. - I promise you - nothing you ever shoot will know the difference between the two!

If you want to shoot .510" bullets, build a .500 A-Square. It is a SAAMI factory cartridge, not a wildcat, and converting a CZ550 from 416 Rigby to 500 A2 is very easy.

I have been where you are and decided on the .500 A-Square. I also considered the .500 AHR, as well as the .500 Jeffery and the .505 Gibbs. My rifle was built for me by AHR using the CZ 550 Magnum action and I am very happy with it.

IMO, the .500 A-Square is the most practical (note, I did not say traditional or nostalgic) .500 by far. Brass is easy to come by, since it is based on the .378 Wby. (or .416 or .460, etc., Wby.), and a wide variety of bullets is available, since bullet diameter is .510", and, as you say, .510" bullets are far more common and are offered in a greater variety of bullet weights than .505 inchers. Also, brass is available from several sources with proper headstamping (an important factor for anyone contemplating hunting with the cartridge overseas), and as 500grains has said, the A2 is a SAAMI standardized (i.e., non-wildcat) cartridge.

I can get an easy 2,300 fps with 600 grain bullets in the A2--easy, in that it's a low pressure loading. I can push things (and pressures) and get nearly 2,500 fps, but I decided I didn't need that much for hunting purposes.

I am going to experiment with the Barnes 570 grain TSX and 570 grain FN solid bullets as soon as I can get my hands on some. I should be able to push them to 2,400-2,450 fps and still be well under the cartridge's standardized pressure limit of 63,000 plus or minus psi.

From personal experience, I can highly recommend the .500 A2 to anyone wanting a .500 bolt rifle.

500 & mrlexma---

Much thanks!!

I have a gunsmith friend with access to a CZ 550 action and am debating what caliber I could change it to. I can do this for reasonable expense and have far much less in it than a quality Double.

I agree--
I think I will go for the 500 A2 for the reasons noted.I can shoot a variety of bullet weights and load it up or down as desired. The weight will be the same as a double-about 10.5 pounds.Brass will be easier to come by.

If I can shoot and hunt the A2 then I can be assure myself I can handle a quality 500 NE and not sweat the major $$coin to get it.

And yes I could sell the A2 easier if need be.

If I can't hunt a rifle its just a pretty face.

Thanks much!!-- excellent advice from members of this forum have helped me yet again!

I don't have a problem with the 500A2.

In fact after posting I forgot to mention the
460 Wby Brass option then someone else suggested it.

Apart from the Brno action try the M17 Action - they are
really nice when the ears etc are taken off and work well
with big bores.
