Hello,
A friend of mine is interested in the Lancaster 450BPE that Fred Roberts (NSW) is advertising.
http://www.gunshop.com/fredrobertsguns.htm
Has anyone seen it?
Any feedback on the dealer?

Thanks for your help,
WC

Wildcattle,

Yes, I have. I know Fred well and can vouch that he doesn't sell crap.
He has pretty extensive condition reports which he will send you
and they are accurate. I own quite a few guns that Fred used to have.

PM me if needed.

If you need someone to look at it to give you a feel for fit, feel and balance,
let me know by PM.

WildCattle,

I bought a nice shotgun from Fred Roberts in November of 2000. The transaction went smoothly and without problems. When the shotgun arrived it was better than my expectation.

The only negative comments I would make are that Fred's photography is less than stellar and it is a bit difficult to get detailed information from him because he is so busy.

Recently I tried to buy his H&H Royal .303. We just couldn't get together on the deal. By the time I had enough information to feel reasonably comfortable he traded it to somebody in Oz.

So I'll give him an "A" for honesty and integrity, a "C" on communication.

Here's the shotgun I bought from him:

Belgian 12 bore from Fred Roberts

Good luck!

Thank you guys,
Curl, I love your collection. I am very fond of high quality Belgian guns, and you have a couple of very nice ones. Congratulations!
BTW, wouldn't it be easier to neck up an 8x57 to make a 9x57 rather than necking down a 444 Marlin?
500Nitro, I'll wait and see Fred's information. I might ask for your help later in the process if I think it's warranted. Thanks again for the offer.

Wow! That's one of the finest Belgian guns I've ever seen. Put some drop points on the stock and it could be British.

Do you know anything about the maker? I can't make out the engraving on the action. Is there more engraving on the rib?

Do you when it was made? Right before WW1?

Is it a pigeon gun?

Thanks

Gee guys, I didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I know virtually nothing about the heritage or pedigree of my Belgian 12 bore.

Obviously, it's a knock-off of a Holland & Holland Royal, and it was obviously made pre-WW2; maybe pre-WW1. It's a game gun, not a pigeon gun. It weighs 6lbs., 14 1/2 oz. with 72cm (28 1/4") barrels. The funny thing is, the fit and finish of this gun exceeds that of just about every H&H I have seen. (Boy, that statement ought to start a shit-storm!) Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it represents the market value of an H&H.

I was told by Fred that the gun was made to be marketed through a Dutch emporium. The only marks on the gun, engraved on the barrels and on the sidelocks is something like this:

Ned Wapenmagazcin V/ H. S. De Jager Haarlem

This is probably not exactly right because it seems to me (recollection now, as the gun is not in front of me) that one or two characters in the inscription do not come from the standard 26 characters of the English language. If anybody can shed any light on this I would be most grateful.

Back to the Fred Roberts topic. I've not met Fred. He seems like a heck of a nice guy from the emails and conversations we have had. Again, I think he is impeccably honest, so I don't think you risk sending your hard earned dollars into a foreign black hole, provided you come to terms on a deal.

Thanks for the info.

I don't know if you check out this board at all:

http://www.gunshop.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

If you posted some info and pics of your gun there, you may find out more about it.

It's very nice.
