Thanks for the description. That sounds like something I'd at least try. You have to understand though, I live in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and grew up on pickled pigs feet, tripe, cow tongue, scrapple, hog brains, and beef bone marrow.

Exchange a lot of emails with your ph/outfitter, ask lots of questions

Come to Africa with a open mind, you will enjoy it much more

Leave the vegamite at home, I love bovril.

Mike,

WTF is scrapple? - sounds like you need some civilised cuisine! Actually, the Dutch here have a few slightly dodgy recipes also. Hell, the only place you can get anything approaching a decent ruby (ruby = ruby murray=curry) is in Durban

Despite Vegemite, which isn't quite as good as Marmite, Oz has some great food and one of the best meals I've ever had in my life was at Doyle's on the beach.....

Scrapple is pork products including the usual little bits such as pork feet and snouts etc with cornmeal and spices. In short it is all the stuff that failed to make it into hotdogs .

Bill

P.S.- I've had vegemite and have to agree with mickey.

I wonder if a carton of vegemite would make a good tip .........

OOPS!

I was pleased to outwalk my PH on my first safari. He had blisters on his feet and I didn't. He blamed his new Courtney hunting boots.

Afraid I couldn't do that today.

Marmite is just awful stuff. And this is coming from a guy who actually like most of English 'cuisine' like steak kidney pie, pork pies, Cornish pasties, etc.

I remember this date with this Welsh girl when I lived in the UK. She made me try Marmite... I guess I failed the test since it didn't go anywhere...

...... I remember a girl in my youth who used to stick her fingers into jars of peanut paste (peanut butter for the Northern Hemisphere) and jars of vegemite, swirl them around and then slowly lick and suck off her fingers ......

I will leave to your imagination what it looked like.

500grains

I think Bovril has more of a BEEFY taste to it than Vegemite.

NitroX - Maybe that girl you knew was practising for later in life !

Do.. practice shooting from sticks, both standing and sitting.

Do..Reload immediatly after the first shot and be prepared to take another shot.

Do..Take small denomination Rand notes to tip the porters at Jo'burg.

Do..Take photo-copies of all your paper work for the South African Police.

Do..Put your knife in your rifle case before you get on the plane.

Do.. Take Bull Frog Sunblock The absolute best.

Do..Allow more time than you think for airport transfers.

................

Don't..Get irritated at the delay at Jo'burg, they know more about the proceedure than you do.

Don't.. Tip the porters at Jo'burg too much.

Don't.. Take too many clothes.

Don't..Spend all your money on your first trip, you will need some for all the other hunts.

DO Remember that vegemite is a poor imitation of the one and only original MARMITE.

Never had Marmite but if it is anything like Bovril or Vegemite I think I'll pass.

My family comes from South Africa and I have been to the UK quite a bit on the way over there so I have tasted and like mostly all the obscure (for us) UK/African food but do not like the Vegemite family of spreads and don't think I ever will.

Land Down Under
by Men At Work

Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,

"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

I looked up the word "vegemite" in my dictionary back in the early '80s when this song first came out in the USA and was popular. I also had to look up the word "chunder" and as a result, even though I've never tasted vegemite, the two words have always been associated in my mind.

Never looked up "combie" so I still don't know what that is supposed to mean.

combie or Kombie is OZ term for Volkswagen van or mini bus mostly the old split windscreen model from early 1960's. I think it's short for "combination" between a car and van.

Thanks, Steve, for solving an old mystery for me.

And sorry to all for the slight thread hijack . . .

MR

I think the word "opium" has been removed from the "den" in your lyrics. Though I might be wrong.

I'm coming to this discussion late and most everything has been covered quite well. I'd just like to reiterate that you probalby should leave all your North American hunt prejudices at home and go with the flow as has been suggested. On the other hand it is your safari so if something is bugging you don't feel bad about speaking up. As for being in shape that is a good thing but the PH needs to move the safari along at a pace that you can handle. After all you are paying and it is YOUR safari.
