questions about uganda
      #54615 - 12/04/06 05:50 AM

I heard a while ago that they opened up hunting in uganda and I've been looking around the web and can't seem to find anybody offering safaris there. Does anyone have any more information concerning hunting in uganda, conditions, quality of hunters etc. Also I was wondering if anybody had heard of anyone hunting in Gabon? If so what are the conditions etc. I have heard they don't have a very developed tourist sector in Gabon. If antbody could help me out I would appreciate it

Despite rumours, hunting in Uganda never got past a pilot scheme.
Gabon has no legal hunting at the moment.

Hopefully SCI/others can put pressure on these two countries to get organised and benefit from some legal hunting.

We were approached a few years ago by an intermediary from the Game Dept of a certain African country that had previously suffered from a mad dictator.

We wrote a business plan for them and we had some long discussions about the possibility of us taking an area either adjacent to or in one of the Parks. We were pretty keen until it was suggested we might get a better area if we were prepared to "provide" a Govt official with a vehicle. At that point we told them it's not the way we do business.

I'd have loved to have gotten involved up there esp as we had a queue of potential clients but I'm only interested if we can do things properly...............

Geeez, the dude's got to get around! What's wrong with some wheels for the man!?!

No, but seriously, in many cultures compensation to the 'official' is viewed the same way as paying a commission to a sales rep or a percentage to a lawyer for personal injury case, a very very big percentage I might add. I do not know the custom there to speak with authority but it may be kosher. When I was in India the official takes a percentage. It is normal and NOT a payoff, well, not any more than a commission to a sales rep or a percentage to a lawyer ...

anyhoooo, just my two pennies worth. I hope all goes well for you in your pursuits to open the territories up.

Steve,

Have you been in contact with Mr. Kaka Matama in Uganda?

I was given some info about him from the UWA regarding his hunts near Lake Mburo awhile ago.

Erik

Yogi-commissions are never paid before the sale.

It's bad enough to get asked for something like that - but it'd be a lot worse if you gave it and then the bugger lost his job and you had to start all over again with someone new....... no, I'm afraid it's not my style and I just won't play their little game.

Erik, If it's the guy I'm thinking of, he has a small, plains game hunting operation in a fenced area up there which is obviously not of interest to me either. The only thing I'd be interested in would be a predominantly Dangerous Game area in one of the Nat Parks so that I had the support of the local game scouts. I'd also want to run it myself and not go through an intermediary........ I'd love to get involved up there but it would have to be by my rules..........

Steve,

I was told by the UWA that Kaka Matama was allowed to set up hunts for buffalo in the Lake Mburo area (southwest corner of Uganda, near the border to TZN), as the locals have trouble with national park buff destroying crops on the farms surrounding the park. As I understood it, it was mainly for buff, and not really plainsgame.

Erik

PS. Sending you an e-mail regarding that ele skin.

Erik,

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else then....... I haven't heard from the guy for about 2 years now.......

Macleod470,

Thanks, rest assured if I ever did get something set up there I'd be shouting it from the rooftops!
