Strongest Double Reciever?
      #54494 - 09/04/06 11:21 AM

The David Mackay Brown website states that his RoundAction SxS Double Reciever "is without doubt the strongest of designs."

I dont know enough about SxS rifle designs at this stage to know what makes it stronger than any other SxS breakopen rifle. Can someone Knowledgeable tell me what makes it stronger or the strongest as claimed?
Surely he is only refering to break open actions and not including the Hoenig rotary or Hagn fallingBlockSxS.

I believe the round action is considered stronger than an action based on the Anson & Deeley cocking principle because the action bars are not hollowed out for the cocking levers. With the A&D design a lot of metal is removed from the bars for this purpose.

Here's a photo of an A&D showing the bars and the cocking levers protruding from the front of the bars (in the foreground):

Here's the explanation of strength stated on the David McKay Brown website:

"Strength is obtained by a solid action body with only two small ejector holes. Other actions (side lock) have larger rectangular slots passing through the body."

I don't have a photo of the bars of a Scottish round action, but I know they have small round rods placed near the bottom of the action, just above the trigger plate. These rods do the work of cocking the action.

I had posted Graham Greener's explanation on the strength of the Greener Facile Princeps action here some time ago though I could not locate the thread just now. It was considered the strongest break open double rifle action in the golden days of British gunmaking before WW-2 broke out. Some consider it ugly and the problem that Greener faced was that it was extremely expensive to manufacture and they lost a lot of money making them becaue no one wanted to pay as much for a boxlock design (which is what the Facile Princeps was in the end) as they would pay for a sidelock. Greener recently reintroduced the design and have made the first Facile Princeps actioned double rifle (a 375 Magnum, I think) since the war but I have also heard that they are concentrating more on sidelock rifles as they seem to be facing the same prejudiced that they faced in the past. Sad, and I hope that the design does not go into cold storage as it did post WW-2.

Most true fans of the Scottish (trigger plate) Round Action feel that the design of the solid, removeable, triggerplate allows the action to be more solid and thus, stronger. This is why the actions were rounded, to gain advantage of this design and make the action more slim and light. A true Scottish round action is far more than an A&D boxlock that's had the corners rounded off (as some have tried to market)! They are quite interesting actions especially when used for a shotgun and it seems as though no two of the old guns are alike (excluding pairs!).

DoubleD,

Thanks for finding that link. Somehow, I couldn;t when I tried. And I wasn't even having cocktails at the time!
