Anybody heard of this company or firm? They are not in Boothroyd's directory so they may have been a gun merchant during the late 19th and early 20th century who put their name on guns made by other companies. A search on the www produced almost nothing. Thank you.

John,

I find a William Schofield 1873-1882 at 35 Weaman St. Birmingham.

Searching the Internet Gunclub historical Data base I find Joshua Scholefield & Sons of New York. Also known as Scholefield Sons & Goodman 1842-1870

DD,

Thanks for the info. The spelling of Scholefield on the rifle is correct and there are post-1904 Birmingham proofs on the barrel. I think this was an agency or store that sold guns made by other folks under their own name like Sears and Montgomery Ward use to do in the USA. I did find out that there were two companies that made alot of firearms that were sold under other trade names - W.W. Greener and Westley Richards. I don't see any stampings from these companies on this rifle although I haven't checked under the butt-stock or forearm yet.

DoubleD

Great Link. I looked up five of my guns through it that I couldn't find modern address's for.

Could it be a U.S. made Scholefield for sale in Britian. It's my understanding that a gun would have to be British proofed before it could be sold there. I don't know how correct that is.

A General rule of thumb among Martini's is that rolled stamped markings were applied by the maker.I don't know how that applies to others. Hand stamped or engraved markings were applied by the Retailer. Both of my Hollis Martini's are engraved markings. My 3 Westley Richard Martini's are all rolled stamp. But I know in fact that the one Westley Richards was at least partially made by Francotte. At least the inner workings.

The Westley Richards website has a feature that allows you to date your rifle.

DD,

At this point, anything is possible. However, the "Field patent" single shot is, as far as I know, an English action. The only other rifles I've seen with this action has been two Holland and Holland marked both in 303 caliber and one CW Andrews marked in 400/360 caliber.

There was also a Joshua Scholefield in Birmingham - is it the same guy as in New York? - I have no idea. It is at times like this that I realize how lacking my gun library really is.

Well, I've got more info. now that I received Kirton's book on single shot British rifles. The name of this company was and is Scholefield, Goodman & Sons and they were retailers in Birmingham. There apparently are records for the company in the Birmingham Museum including customer ledgers. They possibly built their own rifles from Field's patent actions and with barrels made by others. Kirton has several photographs and copies of two pages from a Scholefield 1896 catalogue in his book, which by the way is spectacular and has chapters on all the single shot actions that were made from 1865 onward. If you like British single shots, this is a must have for the library.
