Idea for a .450 what do you think?
      #53959 - 03/04/06 12:17 PM

At times I have too much time on my hands and Get to playing around with the loading dies and my lathe and such trivial stuff. For example, the other day I got a bit bored with the repair work and got playing a bit and necked the .300 short mag up to .458. Now this new (AT least for me) creation will hold 69 grains of IMR 3031 to the base of the shoulder so it should equal the .458 Winchester. In a Mauser length action even with heavy bullets you can seat them out far enough so you do not loose case capisity, un like the .458. What do you think, have I founf a usful use for the short mag case?

The winters in Maine must be very very long! I think the "short action" is very over-rated. OK for mountain rifle, but not much benefit in DG rifle.

Yes, the winters are very long up here and for the most part I agree with you!!!! I too do not the stubby actions but this would give the poor folks a rifle about as long as a double rifle but at far less cost. In reality I am not a short mag fan either and this is the first one that has intrigued me. The case will however hold 69 grains of IMR 3031 when filled to the base of the shoulder.

I spoke with Rich at Pac-Nor barreling in my home state of oregon. He has built at least one rifle in your experimental caliber and states its knocks big bears down quickly! If you want a rifle he can set you up.

I am not a fan of short barrels but the .458 WSM in a 24" setup spells elk timber rifle for me. Would be better than the .45/70.

You said it Joe!! and the 45-70 does that well but the shorter rifle would be a lot handier in the thick stuff! It sounds like a great idea to me. I may have to have one.

You may indeed be on to something here. If we examine the history of the 9.3X62, we find a cartridge designed with a similar premise in mind - that of giving the the "average guy" access to a dangerous game rifle at an affordable price. This cartridge loaded with a 400 or 450 gr X bullet could make for a very capable bear gun.

I hope you are right!!! I will probably call it the .450 DGW for dangerous Game weapon, sort of like the .366 DGW which I developed on the .416 Rigby case. I am trying to get it ligitimised which is a long process. At present it is in Cartridges of the World (Tenth edition page 201) and Quality Cartridge is making brass and loaded ammo for it, Midway sells the brass also. I hope I will have as goor results with the .450.
At present the reamer is on the way and I have done some playing with cases. I can dump in 67 grains of 3031 and fill the case to the bace of the shoulder, this would not be a compressed load however 69 grains of that powder in the .458 winchester with a 500 grain bullet is. The reamer I have comming is in reality a .300WSM reamer that Dave Manson of Loon lake Tools is fitting for removable pilots. I will cut the chamber using this reamer and use a .458 Winchester reamer to cut the throat. This will give me room enough to seat even the heavy bullets out far enough so you do not loose any case capisity. I have high hopes that this cartridge will equal the .458, you should only need 20to 22 inches of barrel and a standard length and some short actions will give you plenty of mag length. I will try to keep you guys informed as work progresses.

There is a gunsmith up in Oregon who has already done this. I tried to find his web site but couldn't. You might want to check the AR big bore forum from time to time.

what about the 458 2 inch or the the 450 G/A in a standard receiver, i would go for one of those two, preferably the G/A
and 9,3x62 is used much here in norway and its a fine round. (he`s a viking)
