BUFF/PLAINS GAME HUNT-WHAT BEST 2 CALIBERS??
      #53799 - 02/04/06 12:07 AM

A hunt to Masailand TZ is being planned for the future for Buff/Plains game hoping for 2 Buff.

Calibers available-7Mag,300mag,338Mag,375H&H,416Mag,458WM,470NE and others--
CONSIDERING the Terrain and game---
What would be the best 2 Calibers(among those mentioned) to carry? WHY?

A 470NE Double and a scoped 375H&H?
A 470NE Double and a scoped 416?
Two scoped 416's or 375H&H's(i.e. a 2nd one for b/u)?
A scoped 416 and a open sighted bolt 458WM?
A dedicated Buff gun and a 300 mag for Plains game?
Other suggestions?

Thanks to members of this forum for any suggestions beforehand!!!

470 DR and a quick detach scoped 375. You can use the DR for close shots and following up. Have a bearer carry the 375 so you can switch if some PG gets in the way or if you need to take a longer shot. Then you can use the 375 if you tag out on the Buff.

Who are you going to Masailand with? I am going in November for a 10 day and am really looking forward to it.

Since plains game is on the menu as well, I would go with the 416 and 375. My logic, however warped it may be, is that the 416 can be used as a plains game rifle, but not the 470 IMHO. Also, if something happens to the 416, the 375 should prove an adequate substitute.

I'm doing that type hunt in '07 and I'll be taking a 458 WM with 1x4 scope and a 375 Weatherby with a 3.5x10.

Since I've never hunted Tz, I have to ask, at what ranges does one usually take Plains game over there? If some long shots are in order, my choice that worked for me this past June on the exact hunt except it was in Zim, was a 300 Weatherby and a 416 Rigby. jorge

Mike

I think your reasoning makes a lot of sence. Either the 416 or the 375 can do double duty as a DG rifle or a plains game rifle. My 458WM and 375 Wetherby don't quite fit the double duty framework because the 458 doesn't have the trajectory to reach a Coke's hartebeest way out there but I would feel comfortable shooting out to about 200 yards with it. The 375 Weatherby should be excellent at 30 or 300 yards. I don't think there is a perfect coupling of 2 rifles for everything. Any combo I can come up with has some flaw.

Three years ago, a friend of mine used his .416 Rigby on his first ever African Safari, a plains game hunt in Namibia. He shot 8 animals with it, including a huge bull Giraffe. All were one shot kils. My last two hunts were plains game only hunts, and for them I used my .375. I took 9 shots, and killed 9 animals up to the size of Zebra. I know many hunters who have killed Cape Buffalo with both the 416, and the 375, so to my mind they are an excellent plains game/buff combo. Neither is "perfect" for the game at hand, but they will certainly do quite nicely.
