300 H&H brass, future of cartridge...???
      #53432 - 28/03/06 10:07 AM

I was wondering if anyone makes 300 H&H brass other than WInchester? It seems that Win. didn't even make any last year, and I don't know if they are this year.

I am set on having either a bolt gun or a Ruger No 1 built in 300 H&H but am a little concerned about future reloading / ammo prospects, especially where a proper headstamp is required.

Step #1 Find a crystal ball.
Step #2 Rub briskly.................

Buy a lifetime supply now, while it is relatively inexpensive. ...next problem?

There's also Bell brass and Quality Cartridge.

I don't have purchase info for Bell, but QC has a website at http://www.qual-cart.com/

There are still ample stocks of the Winchester brass available here in AK, or at least the last time I checked Sportsman's Warehouse.

You can always revert to reforming .375H&H if brass becomes unavailable for the .300H&H, which I doubt in the next 5 yearsor so.
: For re-forming, you may want an intermediate die, like a .358 Normal FL or seater die, then try a .300 H&H seater diek then the FL die. You will have to lube the cases, but barely. Too much lube is usually the problem.
: For now, search around and buy up what you can. I wouldn't be concerned.

I'd stock up on brass. The only certain future supply you'll be able to bank on with absolute certainty is the brass you'll buy today and keep in reserve.

I believe in this practice anyway, even with popular chamberings such as the 270 Win., 300 Win. Mag., and 375 H&H. I must have 5,000 or more new, unfired cases in certain calibers, and I don't feel the least bit bad about it, either.....

Benny,

If you're in the US there are several shops that could supply you with the brass. Mike Schrank's Smoke N Gun in Waukegan IL recommended Aardvark Arms to me about two months ago when I asked them about obsolete calibre ammunition for a friend in India. Mike also told me that their gunsmith David Norin chambered a number of guns these days for many of the old chamberings and that they worked with Aardvark for loaded ammunition as well as for brass. No idea where Aardvark get it from, but they should be able to supply it to you.

Best wishes and good hunting!

benny,

Have a look at Qual-Cart. These folks sell brass for just about everything and with proper head stamp.

I believe Jamison makes cases for them.
