South African Plains Game Prices
      #53230 - 24/03/06 02:11 PM

What is going on with the prices demanded by some South African Safari Operators? I just clicked on the website of one operator, and I couldn't believe their prices for a plains game hunt.
1 X 1 $425.00 US per day
2 X 1 $350.00
Observer $175.00

Trophy Fee Examples
Baboon $100.00
Burchell's Zebra $1100.00
Giraffe $4500.00
Hartman's Zebra $2600.00
Nyala $2350.00
Red Hartebeest $1500.00
Springhare $100.00
Jackal $100.00

The days before and after the hunt starts are charged at the full hunting rate.

All per diem fees, and anticipated trophy fees to be paid in advance by telegraphic transfer prior to your safari.

IMO this is bordering on lunacy.

Mike, it's getting crazy alright! Actually, Namibia and Zimbabwe likely represent the best safari values today.

By way of comparison, here's a link to Coenraad Vermaak's 2006 price list, who has operated in RSA since 1970s, and is one of the top safari companies in that country.

The Nyala trophy fee looks pretty good, Mike. Still cheaper than Zim. Not sure what the trophy fee is for Nyala in Moz, though.

However, if you want a shock, check some RSA trophy fees for Sable...

IMHO the Nyala trophy fee is still up there (not as high as some), but higher than a lot of them

You're right about Sable prices in RSA. In boht RSA and Namibia, Sable were going for between 7 and 9 thousand dollars US! Cape Buffalo prices in RSA are up in the stratosphere as well. The last I checked they were between 9 and 12 thousand dollars for the trophy fee. OUCH!

Mike

My honest feeling is that RSA with the best operators is probably worth it for animals like nyala, vaal rhebok, mt. reedbuck, red duiker, suni, cape kudu, bushbuck, grysbok. In other words for a collector. I think for a general bag plains game safari Namibia is a better value. We put several people last year with a guy that doesn't even have a website and hunters were literally bubbling over. Packages are very attractive there with some excellent hunting being available starting at $4995 for 7 days.

One has to shop around in South Africa. Some of the prices are just silly but others very reasonable. I use certain animals as benchmarks and if their prices are above reasonable immediately look elsewhere.

Namibia seems to be very attractive price wise for plains game.

I agree on the price differences in S.A. It's amazing. If your going there, shop around. I've been there, done that, and won't go back.
Mark:
Your prices are about average for Namibia I think.
I can do the same hunt you advertise, except for the cat, for $3130. (This is 2005 prices, slightly higher this year.)
2X1 $200
Kudu $750
Gemsbok $420
Duiker $200
Hog $360
Cat ?
Baboon Free
Jackal Free
Birds Free
Beer Free
I would guess with the increase in prices, you could do this hunt in 2007 for $3500.
This is the hunt my son and I went on. We shot 10 animals and 4 made Rowland Ward. Kudu, Hartebeest, Springbok and Duiker.
The PH/Owner has been guiding Europeans for years. He's a local guy. Born and raised in the area. That's one of my few requirements. I won't go to Africa and hunt with some guy from California or Washington.
Here's a few of his other prices.
Eland $1450
Giraffe $850
Hartsman's Zebra $550
Burchells Zebra $550

Not trying to rain on your parade, just supplying info.
By the way, I'm not an Outfitter and have no monetary interest in this outfit.

BB

No parade to rain on. I wasn't saying we offered the cheapest prices in Namibia Actually It would be very unusual if we could offer a really cheap hunt. Our goal is to offer good value for the dollar and that seldom equals the very cheapest.

If you had a great hunt for a little over $3000 that is fantastic.
A total price of $400-$500 per day including your trophy fees is excellent. If everything else was top drawer with no extra charges you really have found an excellent value.

Regards,

Mark
