G'day and question regarding Extractors/Ejectors
      #52969 - 22/03/06 04:35 AM

Hi all, my first post here.

Glad to have found this forum and the wealth of information available here.

Curious on something, why don't manufacturers like Merkel and Krieghoff not offer ejectors on their DG doubles? Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I have read they only come with extractors for some reason. From stuff I have read over the years regarding doubles used in africa/india most of these were fitted with ejectors, so why is this considered unfashionable these days? True extractors offer more extraction power as compared to ejectors, but surely if this was a huge problem ejectors would not have been fitted to so many of those fine english doubles in the first place. I had a the pleasure of firing a Westley Richards 450/400 some years ago and those ejectors really punched the empty case out with almost brutal force.
Been toying with the idea of getting a Merkel 470NE but have been a bit put off by the extractors as I would prefer ejectors on a double. I have also read that extractors are better for DG because the 'pings' don't give your postion away... I find this a bit silly as surely two shots from a NE double are a lot louder than the ejection pings at reloading so who cares at that stage?
Anyway, your feedback would be appreciated.

I am no expert, but I will venture a few guesses for you to consider.

First, you say that many of the old English doubles had ejectors and that is true. This may be nothing more than the difference between fly fishing and bait casting.

Remember that the manufacturers you are discussing are German. I think the Germans take pride in their engineering, and they are going to make a gun that they deem will be the most trouble free and safe. With that mindset, they would go for extractors; the more utilitarian of the two options.

Second, it may just be a price point issue in manufacturing. Other than that, my experience has been that either way I need to get the gun off my shoulder to remove the hulls from a sxs and reload. My 2 cents worth adjusted for inflation...1.6333 cents!

You are the consumer and it is your choice.

Most folks nowadays think talking about guns is a perversity. I view the old guns as being a record of the industrial revolution transforming the ordinary into high art and functionality.

I think you've overgeneralized the English guns. Yes, many had ejectors, but I would guess that just as many didn't. Of the rifles owned by the famous pre-war African hunters that I've seen and handled, quite a few were non-ejector.

With regard to the German guns, I think what 577/500WR said makes sense. As long as you don't buy one in a rimless caliber, which isn't a good idea anyway, it really doesn't matter in DR. I own both, and don't particularly care for ejectors. You have to decide what is important to you, and go from there.
