45s_saves_lives

You asked about the penetration ability of a .45/70 with 540 gr Hard cast projectiles.

The fellow client in the Matetsi tried shooting an elephant with them. The elephant was already dead, he having shot it with a .500 A-square or something. They shot it in the skull with the .45/70 to see if it penetrated adequately. From memory I think they thought it penetrated adequately with about 3 1/2 feet of penetration. Myself I think more may be better but they thought that was OK to hunt elephant with the next year.

Man, I come over here thinking this is the "professional's choice" website where the most learned come to exchange ideas and what do I run into?
Another neophyte trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, with that ridiculous pumkin roller, replete with meaningless stats, stacks of wet newspaper and zero experience.
There are some very smart and experienced people that covered in excruciating detail the shortcomings of the 45/70, yet some just use selective reading. Hell, as jpk stated, you can even use a 22 to take an elephant and yes we are all aware that Garrett took the Big Five with it, but so what? Fred Bear did it with a bow also. You know, you can lead people to knowledge but you can't make them learn. jorge

jorge

I think you just picked the wrong week to come over and have a look !!!

This forum is not normally like this post.

By the way, I like your phrase
"Another neophyte trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear,

meaningless stats, stacks of wet newspaper and zero experience."

It's one thing to come here and ask a questioon.

It's quite another to ask a question and provide the answers and dare any one to prove you wrong and when they do, argue with them.

Of course I can't remember anyone who just came here and asked the question and listened for the answer.

On the other hand there is a tendancy of some to immediately go in the attack mode when the question is asked and not even consider it just might be a legiitmate question from some one who doesn't know the answer.

In every other discussion on this board the members have been true gentlemen. But that question just seems to turn some into rabid dogs.

This will be my last reply to this post. This is getting pretty silly. I never "dared anyone to prove me wrong". And I never said that the 45-70 was god's gift to big game hunting either. Nor did I say that it was beter than classic rounds. I didnt call it a stopping round either. All I said was that it has a large diameter, heavy, and well constructed bullet at medium velolcities. Which makes it "adequate", not outstanding or exceptional or anything of the sort. Just adequate. And therefore not in the realm of "stunt hunting".
And Jorge you may feel free to kiss my ass at any time you wish. To call someone you know nothing about a neophyte makes you far worse than any of the people you bashed in your reply.
I never bashed anyone for their opinions. Nor did I ask a specific question. All I did was ask for opinions, not answers.
I hope this matter is settled. It is for me anyways.
My next post will be on handguns, God help me!!

Kiss your ass? I'll leave that to your domestic partner. Neophyte is not a pejorative term, unless of course you have a Pe Wee Herman complex.
Have you hunted any of the Big Five? I've hunted buffalo (once). That makes me a neophyte, but I had enough sense not to go with an obsolete cartridge on my first buff hunt. See? being a neophyte ain't that bad! You really shouldn't ask strangers to kiss your ass, some might take you for a butt-pirate. jorge

45s etc.....I'll only ask you once to cease the vulgarity. Other forums may tolerate that, but we don't. If you don't like it, you're free to go elsewhere.

It's quite apparant from your responses that your only intent was to muck things up here. It won't be tolerated from you, or anyone else for that matter.

Jorge, as you well know, it only takes one to muddy the clear waters. It will get filtered out.

I think is time to close the thread, as I see it is degenerating into an AR style fight. It has mostly run the course anyway with little new constructive info being added or discussed.

Lets aim for constructive discussions.
