Whitworth Factory Muzzle Brake???
      #52835 - 20/03/06 12:35 PM

Did Interarms ever offer or supply the Whitworth Express rifles with a "factory brake"? If so, when and under what circumstances?

Disc or drum?

That's a new one for me.

Luv2
Disc front drum rear.........power assisted of cource!

Seriously now, no, not to the best of my knowledge.
The poms have been known to fit muzzel brakes as standard to some rifles...........what's that you say?????
Not on the Whitworth Express though, neither Pommie or US models.

L2S,

You should have figured these guys would not pass a great straight line like that.

I recall putting some MB's on some Whitworths when I worked for KDF. Seems to me it was a lot of 10 or 15. But I am sure that was after Interarms who was importing them into the U.S. went under.

Mine came used with a magnaport that I've since cut off and re-crowned. I've seen quite a few listed with magnaports, so I wonder if some distributor got a bunch of these, had em cut and re-sold. Bob

bobc,
How much difference did it make to the felt recoil after you removed the magnaporting?

bobc,
I, too, have seen a slew of these in 458 with Magnaporting, but the manufacturer didn't do the work. I think a shop somewhere bought a bunch and did the deed.

One for sale here on this forum is purported to have "factory brake and knurled end cap" for when the brake is removed. It is a nice set up, but I do question the insistent representation by the seller that it is all factory. I had never heard of this, but thought I would ask the good members here about the veracity of the claim.

Still, it is a nice looking package, and I feel worth the $$$.

I didn't notice a huge difference when I cut off the magnaports. Mainly I lilked not having the muzzle blast and the clouds of dust and stuff flying off the bench when I got rid of the ports. I usually use a Past pad at the bench and mostly have been shooting standing up, so the recoil isn't much of an issue. Shooting at game, who notices recoil anyway? I don;t regret getting rid of the ports at all. My shoulder can take recoil better than my ears can take blast. I'd especially doubt that a ported barrel with a knurled cover would be factory. I think most of these guns were built before the muzzle break craze took hold. Bob

To the best of my knowledge, no Whitworths were ever imported into the United States with a factory installed muzzle brake of any sort. I've not seen them offered overseas either. All the ones I've seen with muzzle brakes installed (which is darn few) have been after market installations.

Mikeh is correct, No Whitworth rifle I have ever seen came with a factory muzzle brake. Many American shooters sent their Whitworth African Express rifles to Maganaport to be ported, because they were, first wimps, and secondly didn't know any better, and thirdly, because when the Whitworth rifles were being sold regularly, Muzzle brakes, and BOSS systems were in Gun RAG vogue! IMO, useless!

Luv2Safari, if I bought that rifle you are looking at, the first thing I'd do is, turn the end of the barrel down, and re-crown!

Mac,
Although it was offered here at $899.00, I see it sold on GA for $799.00. It was a nice rifle, otherwise.

I opted for an FN Sako in 375 Weatherby at a good price. I have my early Win Mdl 70 and an Interarms Alaskan in 375 H&H and thought I wanted to play with something else.

Have you had any experience with the Pachmyr Lo-Swing mounts? I may move the one on the MK X to the Sako...???

L2S Sorry to be so slow in answering your post, but I'm involved in a very intensive radiation therapy treatment schedule. It seems the lump in my throat was cancer, and I had surgery about two months ago, and am now in the Radiation therapy phase . This is a daily affair that will take seven weeks, so I'm not visiting the net as I once did!
To answer your question about the Pachmyr low swing, I do have some experience with it. Not on a 375 Wea, however! Mine was on a Mod 70, 338 Win Mag, and I had zero problem with it. Like a fool, I sold that rifle along with the Lo-swing, and Luepold 2-7 scope. I'd be interested to know how it fares on a 375 Wea rifle! I wish pachmayr had not stopped makeing this mount, as I found it ideal for the rainey tundra of Alaska, or shooting into the sun, accross canyons in New Mexico. I also had one modified, and mounted on a Ruger Mk-1 .22 pistol, with a Redfield pistol scope. It worked fine to flip the scope asside for running shots at Jackrabbits! For long shots at sitting rabbits, or shooting with a spot light for coyotes the scope was the nuts!

Mac,

You have no idea how happy I am to see your post, my friend, and get better soon.

I have scrounged up two FN bases...one NIB...and several top ring loops. I have now mounted a 2X7 Leupold on one and a 3x9 on the other...sighted in the 2x7 for 100 yards with 300's and the 3X9 with hotrod loads using 260 Noslers at 2850fps at 225 yards. These mounts are a wonder!! I can move scopes on and off, and everything goes right back to zero. Not only are they an excellent swing mount, they are a very good QD with the second ring loop. The second base and a ring loop will make it down under to Alan Moon. MAN! Is it going to cost him!!

Get well and let's hunt together, buddy!!!

I know the muzzle brakes I installed on the whitworths were after market and not Factory. We supplied the knurled thread protector along with the installing the brekes on those guns

But what would you call the ones from Weatherby. They would ship us stock that had not been sold yet and we would install brakes and send them back to Weatherby. They then cataloged the gun with muzzle brake. Later we set them up to do there own.

The muzzle brake is a very useful device. Put one on your heavy barrel 22-250 and it will hold the muzzle down and let you see prairie dogs explode when you use high magnification scopes.

Probably the best use how ever was that they generated income by which the boss was able to pay me and I could buy beans.

Can't think of any other good use fo them.

Mac you get with that treatment and get back in the field, it ain't time yet!!!!
