Just finished converting a Ruger #1 to 505 Gibbs...and thought there might be some interest here. Somewhat surprising was how straight forward the conversion was. The Ruger action is "made to order" for the 505...nothing on the action requires modification. I installed an extractor for the 416 Rigby and it also works fine without modification. I used a straight taper Pacnor barrel which allowed use of the Ruger 458 Win quarter rib..again, without modification. I used a Breako mercury recoil reducer in the butt stock and installed a muzzle brake...gun finished at 12lbs even, and balances just forward of the receiver. I'll post pictures, if I can figure out how.

Raff, Sights are standard Ruger plus an all steel Weaver K1.5 Microtrack. The front sight band needed to be lathe bored ,and when it was getting too thin, it occurred to me to mount the band 1/2 on the barrel and 1/2 on the muzzle brake. I turned the brake to the correct diameter and left a shoulder for the band to butt against, so it can't move from recoil. Worked out nicely...and moderates the "look" of the brake. Also, was able to use the banded swivel stud Ruger makes for the 458. I cut a 1B forend just aft of the swivel stud and installed an ebony tip...makes a long forend, but the rifle barrel/brake is 30" so the long forend looks right.

Be happy to post a picture, if someone would explain how!

Otto;
If you can, post pictures and please do one of the
front sight/brake area. Maybe someone here will post
them for you. Thanks

What would you guess you have invested in the rifle so far?

I started with a 30-06 #1B...kinda the cheapest #1 at the gun shows. PacNor barrel costs $200. Manson reamer, if you want to count tooling, $190. Ruger parts from Brownell include banded front ramp, banded front swivel stud, quarter rib, screws, pins, sight...all for 458...about $90. 416 Rigby extractor from Brownells $8. Kickeez pad...$22, Breako recoil reducer...$36, Gunner's Choice brake...$60, ebony chunk...$15,...all from Brownells. Adds up to a bit over $400 not counting the gun or reamer. Don't have a clue what a gunsmith would charge to put it together.

A well done conversion which I will appreciate from a distance.I do not intend to shoot that much bullet and powder at one shot -my area of interest now is mainly Benchrest 6PPC and bigger but I have worked on these for friends and customers over the years. Having said all that my first thought on seeing this is "How does it shoot?" How did you bed the stock and hanger? And how long did this project take to this point? Thanks.
I really like the ebony touch -that fits in so well with the concept. It just looks right -like it belongs there. I had not really thought much before about doing this but it looks so good in the picture you have me thinking about this now.

Butt stock was bedded with steel-bed from Brownells between the receiver and front flats of the stock. These flats were drilled with an 1/8" drill to provide more adhesion area...and more strength. I used spacers made from old credit cards behind the top and bottom tangs which set back the stock and gave relief at the radiused areas of the tang...without relief it's likely to split. The steelbed makes an off color line at the junction of wood and metal which is not offensive to me. I chose the stock for it's staight grain...has no figure. Some #1 stocks are not suitable for heavy recoil. The barrel profile is the heaviest you can use with the factory hanger...anything heavier won't clear. This makes bedding in the factory 1B forend a touchy job. The forend is JUST wide enough to work. An A/H forend off a #1 .458 would liely be easier. Total time was little different from any similar job. Forend inletting was fiddly as previously mentioned as was the lathe boring of the Ruger .458 banded front sight.
