Recoil: .470 compared to .458,.416 ,458lott?

I'm considering a Merkel 140 in .470. asking price is rather low with claw mounted scope included. On face and good condition as far as I can see..
(seconhand is what my funds can manage... so other makes are out of the question, although an old english make would be best... )

I've never shot a double before, so are rather new to the game. However I have a sxs shotgun so know the kind of gun, handling etc.

I've got a CZ550 in .416Rigby, classic stock, find this one manageable, but it does hurt, I'd lie if I said it didn't..! Not so much as to give me a flinch though So my recoil limit is above .416 rigby. Tried a .458lott a couple of years ago, and that one gave me a headache..

So much for my backgground..

My question limits itself to the actual recoil of the gun:

Are there anyone who has tried both rifles? How is a Merkel .470 compared to a standard .458 bolt gun? much the same? Compared to the .416? weight of the CZ .416 app4,8kg/10,6lb
Compared to a .458lott?


(Beeing a rookie I've spent more and more time on this forum, seeing that it holds a high standard! Thumb's up! However I've realised that it will cost me much.... It gives me so many ideas ,that cost way too many jackson's, that again leads to a whole lot of scolding..... )

A 470 won't hurt you. If you can shoot your .416 you have nothing to fear and a lot of fun to look forward to.

Go for it. Don't look back. They're not Jacksons, they're Franklins! and lots of them!

Yeah, agree with Curl. The CZ Rigby can certainly jab you if loaded 'without modesty', whereas a .470 has less recoil velocity in a sensible-weight double. What does the Merkel 140 weigh?
If it's 10.5 to 11 lbs, fine. If it's closer to 10 lbs, Hmmmmm....!

Your choice of the .470 has my thumbs-up. Be sure to let us know the outcome!

Thanks mates Franklins they are...! I just had to hear someone say go for it!

By the way, would 7200USD for a nice secondhand Merkel .470 with claw mounted scope be a fair price? It has a Zeiss on it at the moment.. Has to be rescoped to Leupold anyway..

It's possible to import the same rifle from sweden for the cost of 7250 brand new, although without the mount and scope.. I'm not overly happy about having a scope on a heavy double.. Someone at the forum called it incest here earlier, and I kind of agree...

Any suggestions? What about seconhand value, It's probably higher without a scope? (more potetntial byers?)
