338 Sabi or 338-06???
      #52459 - 15/03/06 07:22 AM

Hello, my first post here, a new guy at all big game hunting, planning to get to Africa within a year or so.

Just wondering if anyone here has experience wuth the 338 Sabi? I am planning to have Sabi build a rifle for me and I like the specs on that round, basically the 318 WR, but at a lower pressure. I am in the United States, so it is a reload only proposition, and I don't reload but I can always start . I was wondering what the pressure difference is between the Sabi and the 06?

Also, if I were to start reloading for the Sabi, about how much life can you get from the brass? I would need to know how much to order along with the rifle. Would the powders used in developing the loads by Sabi in South Africa be available in the states?

Just trying to get a handle on the feasability of the 338 Sabi over the 338-06 which is now a factory cartridge. I love the idea of an African developed cartridge in an African made rifle and I like the idea of the lower pressure, so I hope I can make it work.

Best regards,

Benny

benny,
Welcome!!
In all practicality, the 338-06 is a better choice, but I understand your feelings regarding an all African rig. You will have to live with your choice, and the 338-06 is probably a better bed partner here in the US.

Have you ever considered a 9,3X62? There is a classic from early Africa that does all either of the others will, but is a bit of a bigger "hammer" when needed.

Ditto on the 9.3X62. Nothing says Africa better.

thanks for the suggestions. I was mulling the 9.3 for a while as well as the 300 H&H, both classics.

what is the practical range of the 9.3 where bullets will mushroom reliably?
also, in the 300 H&H, is there any reason that woodleigh's new 240gr bullet for the 30-06 wouldn't work?

thanks,

ben

That 240 grain pill must be an awfully long bullet. Not sure what type of velocity you would get from the 300 H&H using it. Rate of twist in a production model 300 H&H might be a little too slow to stabilize well, but I don't know.

I think the 300 H&H performs its best with 200 grain bullets. Can't really see any reason to go heavier than that. I'm of the mind if you need a heavier bullet or better constructed bullet for the 30 cal magnums than the 200 grain Nosler or North Fork, I'd probably go up in caliber size...

If you run the Nosler B-Tip 250gr .366 out at 2550fps will give you 2039fps at 300 yards and 2309ft/lbs energy. That is shooting far enough and still hitting hard! It'll mushroom enough! If you sight it in at 250yds it will be -4.77" at 300 and +4.20" at 150. It sure makes for a good all around PG killer.
