577-500 BPE or Nitro ?
      #52100 - 11/03/06 05:05 AM

Has anyone ever seen or heard of the 577-500 besides
in the "cartridges of the world"?

Could such rifle be built on a Sauer 12bore(boxlock)
if made for blackpowder only?

The cartridge is uncommon in either guise, the Magnum or the No.2, but neither could be called rare. Several board members here own or have owned rifles so-chambered, me included. Read this thread for details of mine.

Both cartridges were loaded 'nitro for black', however only the larger 3 1/8 inch case was loaded full nitro briefly before tossing the towel to the .500 x 3-inch NE. Both Fleming and Hoyem are far better references than COTW BTW!!

Either version of the .577/.500 cartridge would be a fine contender for a shotgun conversion, however the straight-case .500 would be much easier to build and load for.

Not common. The 3 1/8" Nitro version may have never made it into production. Rodda made something of a specialty of the BPE version. I've seen several Westley's chambered for it as well.

The 577 - 500 The 3 1/8" Nitro version DEFINATELY made it into production
as quite a few guns exist in this calibre - 3 I know have been sold in the last 2 - 3 years.

500 Nitro:

What make were these rifles? Were they full nitro or nitro for black? I've never even heard of a full nitro rifle.

The full nitro .577/.500 3 1/8" cartridge in Fleming's book is a cartridge board dummy. In his footnotes, he indicated what I stated above.

I'll have to look back at my notes - if I can find them !!!
as it is not exactly a cartridge I am very interested in.
