KILL or BE KILLED Charge Practice.
      #51795 - 08/03/06 02:51 PM

What suggestions do members of this forum have to best simulate a DG charge?

If would seem you could practice till your purple and not get the timing down for a direct charge attempting 2 shots or worse an angling charge at full speed on others that needs to be lead like a flying bird? The recent lion video suugested that many shot BEHIND the charging beast.

Any ideas on how to perfect such desired skills with big Doubles?

What I do is run a line from a plastic 5 gallon oil pail to the rear of a vehicle. With the pail about 20 yards away, I begin shooting as the vehicle accelerates away, and the pail rolls, bounces, and rockets towards me. Great fun, and brings you to quickly understand how easy it is to shoot behind a target which is coming rapidly towards you.

You might find this thread of interest: Elephant charge target sled

It's a target I made to prepair for ele hunting last year.

And since the target stuck out a bit, if the car dragging it passed by very close, it was possible to be hit by the target as it passed doing 40 km/h!

This forced me to jump aside a couple of times after firing of a shot or two. Or else I would have been hit on the head. So your thread topic of "kill or be killed" is the right term!

I understand your concern but believe me, there is absolutely NOTHING can be done and absolutely NO theories that can be applied to DG close range charges.(which is the way they come) It's a matter of snap shooting and snap decision making...... which is why you employ a Professional Hunter.

The best thing and about the only thing you can do is try to learn about animal behaviour and body language (which might but only might help you anticipate a charge) - but even with that, one really needs practical hands on experience....... and even with that experience, it doesn't mean that an individual animal can't have a bad day where it decides to turn a mock charge into a serious one at the last moment....... which takes us full circle and back to saying there's absolutely no way one can set up a practice charge simulation that's worth doing.

Take a look at the Leopard at the bottom right of this page:- http://www.kuduland.com/hunting-in-tanzania.htm That Leopard got wounded and we followed it up in the dark...... the time between seeing it and shooting it would be counted in fractions of a second and we stopped it at 6 yards. I don't even remember seeing that one, but it ended up with a bloody great hole in it's face from my .500..........

There's a Buff there somewhere that did a similar thing with similar results (at 7 yards) as well. Also the Lion has the same sized hole in it's face..... Although not quite for the same reason.... but still put there without planning.

Hope I haven't given you bad news!

You'll never feel more alive than those few minutes immediatly after successfully dealing with such an experience.........

And hey, you only get one life so live it while you can. It's a lousy plane ride to get here..... but well worth it.

I don't often post pics on their own, but here's an example of what you see if you see it:-

This is the result if you get it right:

And if you get it wrong.......:

They're 3 different Lions by the way and only posted for illustration.....

Was that fellow on the top a true charge or mock? Did the camera man make it?

Yes, it was a true charge and I'm still posting, so I guess it didn't nail me......

Joking aside, the charge was in Namibia but there was a fence between me and him....... but he was mad as hell.

I also took the open mouth photo and actually had my lens in his mouth..... there were no fences. However, the Lion and brother (which licked the back of my neck as I took the pic causing the camera shake) had been hand reared and then allowed to live wild (ish) ..... I had the guy who had hand reared them with me when I took the picture.

I know it sounds like bullshit - but I promise you, it's true.

On a real lion hunt--

The MGM Big Boy on top charging looks like death and really pissed!!

Kind of like the last view you see before he jumps and his head and teeth join your body.

Better have the front sight on him and the trigger sear moving--instantly!!Otherwise your going to have a real bad day.

Shakari,

That top Lion is a beauty. One of the nicest pics I have seen by far. Was he in a hunting area?

Bulldog,

He's of two brothers that were orphaned and hand reared and are now kept in a large protected area. They're real beauties although extremely aggressive for some reason..... but no, they'll never be hunted. If there hadn't been a fence between us, I sure as hell wouldn't have had my hands full of camera......

Very useful photographically as once you've sussed 'em out, it's real easy to provoke a charge and as they really mean it, you get some wonderful images...... ...... just have to hope they never make it over the fence though......

C'mon guys. Getting eaten by large African carnivores is a very very old tradition among hominids. Give 'em a chance.

All my friends here in Kenya know that when a lion or buffalo finally get me, I am to be left out for the hyenas. Nicely softened up.
