Hunting in India and Iran
      #51230 - 03/03/06 05:00 AM

I was just wondering how many of you guys out there have had the opportunity to hunt in India or Iran I am very interested in discussing anything that has to do with hunting in those countries. My grandfather was in the state department and he and my dad had lots of opportunities to hunt in India and Iran. Of course I have heard all the stories and have always wanted to hunt in both countries. I know that now you cannot legally hunt in India. They would tell me how fantastic the bird hunting was and they also did some big game hunting. I read the previous post on prince abdorezza(spelling?) passing away and my grandfather actually knew him and my dad would tell me about how much he loved to go Ibex hunting. Anyways anybody who wants to talk hunting about India or Iran I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. Also what do you guys think about the likelyhood of them ever re opening hunting in India? a Indian friend of mine says it probably will never happen in my lifetime.

macleod

There is no hunting for foreignors in India currently and not much available legally for residents either. There has been some talk of boar and nilgai possibly being able to be hunted and nothing yet.

Here are some threads you might find interesting on NitroExpress.com

Some photos of India including some wildlife which I took earlier this year. No hunting unfortunately - Travels to India - some photos

Macleod,

NitroX is absolutely right - the only "hunting" that India has seen in recent years was for wild boar in the state fo Chhatisgarh where five permits were sold to non Indians in 2004. Whatever little hunting takes place there is on crop protection permits and that is why only farmers get to down the occasional boar, fox or nilgai with the permission of local forest authorities.

Cross the border into Pakistan to the West or Nepal to the North of India and you have fine hunting especially for sheep.

Cheers!

I don't think U.S. hunters are allowed to travel and hunt in Iran, either. Pakistan the former Soviet republics would be a better bet.

thanks for the reply's,those links were very interesting especially the hunting proposal one. Growing up I always heard stories about hunting in india and iran and maybe one day I will be able to hunt there. My favorite gun that I own is a remington 700 30-06 built with a custom stock from india made out of kashmiri walnut and inlaid with diamonds made of bone.

Macleod,

Punjab is one more state that has begun to allow hunting nilgai and black boar as wild boar are officially called. There is a process to this - a village council called a panchayat has to approach the Divisional Forest Officer for permission to shoot a certain number of these animals and that is then allowed at the discretion of the officer. That said, it is only open to Indians though there are voices talking about earning the country tourism revenues by allowing non Indians to hunt as well.

Hope this happens soon.

I would definately jump at the opportunity to hunt in india if they legalized hunting.I love to hunt big game but I would also love to do some birdhunting there. My dad would always tell me how fabulous the duck hunting was. He said they would get into a jil(spelling?) which was some sort of water holding pond and wade in and come dusk birds would pitch in by the hundreds. He said the pheasant hunting was the best he's ever done and he also liked to hunt jungle quail and he said peacock was a great eating bird although not very sporting.

Hunting in Pakistan is pretty much regulated now.During the hunting season you can get a permit to hunt partridge, quail, ducks, snipes, chakor and other birds. For animals especial permits are issued for ibex, horned sheep, himalayan ibex, markhor, blue sheep.Apart from this you can also hunt hog deer, chinkara, nilgai, spotte deer etc.but these are unlicensed hunts on private land or with the unofficial permission of the border rangers.Foreigners can hunt if they have permits or they hunt with the locals(like us) without any fear.

I'd really be interested in learning more about hunting in pakistan. I was wondering do you think it is safe for a westerner to hunt in pakistan right now? Also do you have any reccomendations for good outfitters in the area? Thanks for the reply.

It depends on what you want to hunt. For himalayan ibex,Markhor and blue sheep you have to apply for a permit sometime in September(I will send you the details if you desire). These hunts are sponsered by the Govt.under the supervision of the United Nations concerned dept.and are therefore safe and legal.Infact a no. of foreigners mostly westerners participate and a good no. of trophies have been taken. For Sind Ibex permits are issued by the provincial govt.of Sind (my province) sometime in November and again these hunts are perfectly safe and legal.
For bird hunting and wild boar you will have to hunt with the locals like myself as there no outfitters. However you will be perfectly safe in our company as my hunting partners include a judge of the high court and the police chief. So,let me know and I will assist you to the best of my ability.

As far the Pakistan Govt. is concerned it will allow you to export the trophies to whereever you want to .However whether the CITES will allow it I do not know. These animals are on the endangered list but since their hunting is allowed in restricred nos.I think permission may be obtained.I think it would probably depend on your govt.

Internationally, you would need to check whether the particular species was Cites I (Endangered, don't touch) or Cites II (Threatened, limited hunting allowed) but then as Igbal stated, whether you can import them into your own country will depend on that government's own regs.

Macleod470,

Yes, "jheel" briings back some very nice memories.

There was some very nice hunting in the past though shooting a peacock could get you lynched in some parts of the country - the Hindus worship them. There is no bird hunting, of course, at the moment. I am not sure any birds can be hunted on crop protection permits.

The Pakistanis have been much better conservationists and sportsmen. Hat's off to them for their foresight and efforts!

PS I have posted a separate thread with a Times of India article - Nilgai Hunting is now allowed in India. Not to foreign citizens though, at the moment.

Keep your fingers crossed!
