Handguns in Africa

Anybody try to get a handgun into Africa for their safari? I've contacted a couple of outfitters and am getting conflicting answers. Some are saying forget about it. Too much of a hassle. Others are saying as long as you make a case it's for hunting and not self defense customs will give you a pass on it. I'd really like it at my side as insurance for those moments in the tall grass when a rifle shot goes not as expected. Any stories out there on getting handguns into Africa. In particular I'm looking at Tanzania, RSA or possibly Namibia.

Zim is the most handgun friendly of any African country.

Personally, I'd forget it. I don't think the risk-reward ratio makes it worth the effort.
