Chopper Lump Blanks

Anyone know where one could find chopper lump blanks? I mean the barrel with the attached lump prior to them being brazed together?

I've sourced a place for pre-brazed barrels but I don't care for there barrel contour. I spoke with a local specialty metal shop and they could oven braze them if i could supply them with the barrels.

Any ideas?

Heym used to make them. You might also try Ferlach. Should be around US$6,000 to the pair.

$6,000? I'm asking for blanks not a finished set of barrels. For example I've found already brazed sets (no ribs no maching to the lump, no sights, etc) for about $1,600 these are Bohler steel blanks. However as I said the contour is not what I want.

Thanks for the leads though maybe they offer blanks as well.

Just telling you. Why do you think so many manufactureres use monobloks? Not because it is better but because it is cheaper.

Colorado,

I have his book. I've built six on monoblocks so far. I want to try chopper lumps for the action that is nearing completion. I'm pretty sure in there it merely mentions chopper lumps and doesn't tell you how to make them.

Mickey,

I was just trying to make sure we were talking about the same thing. As that seemed awful steep to me for barrel blanks. Aren't their "finished" barrels in that same price range? As I said I was just trying to make sure we were talking about the same thing.

The monoblocks are milled from solid stock. However I have sleeved cut off tubes on 2 maybe 3 guns that had unusable barrels. I won't take a perfectly good set of shotgun barrels and cut them. My own personal choice. I must say that I'm really not a fan of using the cut off method unless the shotgun barrels were originally chopper lumps or they were originally a true monoblock.

Now to be fair the biggest caliber I've made is a 50/70 but the most powerful has been a 9.3x74r that was my last and currently my favorite.

The monoblocks work great but I've been milling an action now for a couple of months that is a snap action (underlever) with the Purdy style locking lugs and all of the mechanical stuff is mounted to the trigger plate. The back of the lacking bar will actually cock the internal hammers. This one uses some flat springs but I'm trying to figure out to get where i want using coil springs on a plunger. That way even if they break they have a high likelyhood of still working.

I bought Ellis Brown's book recently and he included a flyer for Crown Press Custom Parts. I have purchased a top and bottom rib from him with no complaints. He sells Chomper Lump barrels and from the pictures in his catalog they are unjoined. Rifle barrels are listed at $1,850.00 per pair. Talk to Tom if you are interested - 440-275-1400 (work) or 814-774-5739 (cell).

9.3X74R would be great.

Merkel Model 8. It has been great fun so far. In fact I haven't even blued the barrels yet as I've been to busy playing. I can't wait for hunting season to roll back around.
