German Double Rifle help

German Double Rifle
E. Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl
Engraved reciever and barrel rib.
85-90% condition, bores/chambers are pristine!
Beautiful wood, in great/excellent condition.
Slightly Engraved Exposed Hammers.
No rust or pitting at all.

Im not 100% sure on the caliber, it wasnt marked at all. All i can think of is that it was an 8X57JD, but when i looked inside the chambers they didnt look like a necked case, more like a straight wall case. We messured the muzzle end of the bore and it messured .32", the chambers looked long too.

Saw this rifle at an auction warehouse in Southern California (Little Johns Auctions), its set to be Auctioned this August. Was wondering if any one knows anything about it, specifically what it should sell for (ballpark-figure). I wish i had pictures but the battery on my digital camera ran out from using it all day.

The local gunstore owner and friend of mine told me it could be worth about $1,500 to $2,500 ball-park. He would have to see it to properly appraise it.

This rifle really caught my eye, i REALLY want to get it!

Maybe a 8x58R Sauer&Sohn or a 8x72R Brennecke, both based on the 9,3x72R case

Have a look at Cartridges of the World as it has all the European
calibres in it including the Obsolete ones.

Cartridges of the World only shows a few of the old, more popular calibers.There are many more.
A chamber cast is the only real way to find out for sure.If you reload it won't be a major problem to form something to fill the hole. It can be done.
If you manage to get that rifle for the "guestimate", buy it. I'd guess it'll go for twice that price.

Big John,

Schmidt and Haberman made some of the finest bolt actions ever in their pre war heyday. I can imagine how beautiful your rifle must be considerng the firm's reputation.

Do post pictures of it here and show her off a little.

Hey, thanks for all the info! Im going back up to the Auction House maybe tomorrow (March 4th) and ill get some pictures of her. Right now im deciding on getting a .338 Lapua caliber tactical rifle, or this double rifle we are talking about here. Its a hard decision for me, i love both collecting firearms like this fine double rifle, but i also have a passion for long range tactical shooting.

We shall see what happens...

You can order the build of a precision long range bolt gun any time you want.
Chances to get ahold of very nice examples of the old world craft of gunbuilding, especially double rifles which are still in decent shape, are getting fewer and farther between.
I'd go with the double rifle given it's in good shape and it 'moves you'
The bolt gun can come around any time you ask for it.

It turns out that the seller pulled the rifle from the auction!

This does not please me, i wanted that rifle very much.

Stay on track-

Keep saving your money in an account *just for your double rifle*
Get out and handle a lot of double rifles, there's going to be a show in Reno very soon, you might want to get out there and see what there is to see.
I'd seen a Geyger back action toplever hammer double rifle there last show, I don't think it's been sold yet and will likely be priced in the 5500-6500USD range.
There no doubt as well be others.

Take it as a good sign that your gills have been hooked by a double rifle. Let this grab of your attention linger for a while and keep your eyes out for other rifles that might look and feel right for you.
Don't hurry into the purchace of *just one* particular rifle unless you know double damn sure that it's fit and sound and shoots perfectly with ammunition that's known safe and that you can handle -- and is in your price range.

Something will come up, mabye even that same rifle...
