Does anyone have any experience with the old Colt Sauer rifles? I'm contemplating buying one for an upcoming SA hunt in late '06. The rifles are real beauties but they're now 25-30 years old and of course much change and improvements have been made in the last 30 odd years. I was thinking about a 300 Weatherby Mag. or 7mm Rem Mag. for plains game. Should I take a chance or perhaps go with one of the newer Sauer rifles? Any thoughts on this short lived beauty from Colt & Sauer?

The old Colt Sauer rifles were a well-made push feed action, and I would not hesitate to use one on a plains game hunt if you like the fit and feel of the rifle. The new Sauer 202 takedown is also a very nice push feed rifle.

On this picture there is two Sauer. The Sauer Weatherby 460 and (hiden) my tiny 375HH 202 Sauer.

There was a retired German businessman who was a member of our gun club for years, and this man was famous in our area for being a fine rifleman and hunter. He love to acquire quality-built European rifles and shotguns, and he was a man of superb taste and judgement.
One of his rifles was a new Colt Sauer in 300 Weatherby. It was a beautiful rifle, and it shot very well. But as time went on, this man had more and more trouble opening the bolt after the shot. Finally, his cases came out badly bulged just ahead of the belt. It was pretty clear that for some reason his rifle developed seriously excessive headspace, so he sent the rifle back for repair or replacement. I never did find out how it all worked out.
But that episode turned me off on Sauer rifles for good. Personally, I think the action is way over-engineered and too complicated. Every time German riflemakers have deviated from Paul Mauser's original 98 pattern, they've created overly-complicated gadgets that are functionally inferior to the great Model '98..........

Interesting back-up rifle on the hip. What was it?

To me it looks like a sawed off, double barrel shot gun.
