Scope mounts for big bore bolt rifles

What bases and rings do you prefer on your bolt rifles?

And does your choice let you remove and remount the scope without losing zero?

There are fancy rings and bases, but the old-style Weaver bases are among the best for a heavy recoiling rifle. they're just a pain to get the scope's hairs level.
: My .458Alaskan M70 wears Leupold rings and bases and it's scope hasn't moved.
: I firmly beleive that scope rings with screws on both sides, need 4 screws, 2 per side alternately tightened, back and forth, back and forth until 'there'.
: I also firmly believe in light scopes as the 2X Leupold, or if variable, 1-4x at the most.
: Leupold rings go on and off the .458 with bullet impacts very close, generally within a couple inches, but not perfect.

I had a custom quarter rib installed on my .375. The rib is inletted for Talley QD rings and I use this arrangement for an old 2.75 Burris Scout. Repeatable zero is not a problem.

Erik,

I have Talley QD's on my 375H&H. I like them, however, in my trails the repeatability has not been perfect. Shooting, removing and remounting will have my group move up to alomost an inch at 100yds. IIRC, this move was almost always right or left with not much change in elevation. I tried being very careful with the torque I applied when mounting and tried snugging the rings in alternating fashion, an eigth turn on one, then the other. It made no diffence that I detected, the POI still moved some.

I have another scope with the Talley QD's and when the weather improves here I will try that one for repeatability. Hopefully that will be soon and I will let you know how it goes.

JPK

I use claw mounts on my .375 H&H and on my .416 Rem. I use to remove the scope often and thre's no problem.

I had a set of Talley's on my
pre 64 model 70. I did not
like them. The lever was not
stationary on the ring holding
screw. You did not know
if you were in the starting
position from the previous
mount and the levers then
would not line up.

I prefer the Warne system to the Talley. It is Beefier, if not as refined looking. I have used Redfield Junior and Senior mounts for years without a problem. I tried the Leupold Q-D bases and rings with the small stud, and I am not impressed.

The only mounts I have ever had trouble with are Ruger factory rings. I have had them come loose and have had several Rugers that were so off that I couldn't mount a 2X7 or 3X9 Leupold...not enough internal adjustment to compensate for the milling errors.

I mounted a 1.5X5 VXIII on my Ruger RSM with Warne Q-D rings and was happy with everything.

Of them all, I prefer claw mounts, hands down!

I need mounts on my 458. I am
thinking about the EAW . I have
them on my double and have never
had a problem. On a bolt gun they
appear to be 2 piece. On the double
it is 1 piece. Anyone used the 2
piece system?

K80,

I had a Sauer drilling with EAW mounts. They were just fine, and I never had a problem. I did like them! I think they are every bit as good as claw mounts.

I prefer ERA RECKNAGEL mounts and have used EAW, BLASER and HILVER mounts also.
Recknagel are making models that sit lower but still leave room to work the bolt.
Cost is around AU$450 to $500.

I had Leupold QR bases and rings on my old 458 Win. Mag., and they always worked perfectly and still do. These are NOT the Warne-built QRWs, which as not as good.

My custom Echols-built 375 H&H carries custom detachable rings from Tom Burgess, and they're not only beautifully-made, but totally repeatable and reliable.

I have fixed, non-detachable custom Echols-built scope base/ring mounts on my 416 Rem. Mag., and I like this system the best of all.............

The Smithson system works great but it is not for guns costing less than 10K.

I use both the Talley and Warne QDs, and have been happy with both of them.

Talley's on the 425express,conetrol's on the 358 norma, weaver's on the 300 ackley, and buehler's 0n the 30 gibbs. They all work fine and i've never had a scope mount problem. I just discovered this site!

I have a set of EAW mounts installed by NECG on my 1908 Mannlicher Schoenaur. They are perfect and repeatable . only thing I don't like is the laver that sticks out of the left side. I have claws on my Merkle and Drilling, both are repeatable. I think claws are the way to go hands down.
