DR Measurements

I was wondering if a few of you gents out there would help me out. I’m looking to get some measurements from a few DR’s.

I’d like to know manufacturer, caliber, gun weight and barrel diameter at breech and muzzle. I have some frame size information already but would be interested to see how these items change or remain constant from manufacturer to manufacturer as well as caliber to caliber.

Yes BP would be great. Just let me know that they are BP rifles. It would be interesting to see if there are any major differences in the barrel sizes from BP to Nitro.

It would be great to get barrel diameters every couple of inches during the entire length of the barrel to get a real idea of profile but I figured I was already pressing my luck with the above .

Thanks to those that have replied and to all those that I know are wanting to grab their measuring devices.

Knew I had this somewhere, took a while to find!

John Wilkes (maker) Manton .470 NE, weight is just a breath over 11 lbs.

Distance from breech-face/ Outside diameter measured vertically:
26" (muzzles) .717
24"_ .715
22"_ .715
20"_ .717
18"_ .725
16"_ .740
14"_ .768
12"_ .803
10"_ .852
8"__ .908
6"__ .977
4"__ about 1.063
2"__ flats, not measured.

At the breech-face, flats to top of barrel is 1.250 inches
Width across breech-face (both barrels) 2.333 inches

Hope this is still usefull.

Thanks, that is great. It gives a real idea on profiles. I'm just trying to gather data and get an idea for the proper profile on the next build which won't start to fall and will be a 450/400 3" project.

For a 450-400 NE the weight can kept in the 9 1/2 to 10 pound range and still be comfortable to shoot.
Many english doubles are quite a bit heavier than that.

For your thickness at the muzzels just work on approx 100 thou wall which is about the norm for many doubles.
Ideal barrel length 26 inches.
Flats to top of barrels at face 1.170" min.
Barrels remain full dia for approx the length of the chambers then fast taper over short length and then gradual taper all the way to muzzels.
This type of profile leaves plenty of weight where it is needed to achieve nice balance and handling.
Striker spacing approx 1.040".
Width of barrels at face 2.150".

Just a few thoughts based on one of the nicest handling doubles I've ever used.
