New H&H doubles
      #50230 - 18/02/06 10:44 AM

Check out www.drake.net. Lewis Drake has a H&H .375 double for $175g and one in .300 for a bargain 160g. I saw these at the Vegas show, very elaborate French style cases. But last time I was at H&H in NYC, late last year, a sidelock ejector rifle was 125g.

I think H&H has fallen a long way, once upon a time they made working double rifles, albeit very expensive, but the buyers were expected to go use them, and arguably an H&H double (or any double rifle from one of the four or five top Brits) was the tiptop expression of what a hunting rifle was supposed to be. Now they are objets d'arte for rich people to display, luxury goods, divorced from practicality, same as keeping a Lamborghini in the driveway of your McMansion. Pity.

I posted the Jegen Weltweit review of the 400 H&H bolt rifle in the Big Bores forum and they seemed to think that the Euro 30,000 price was not bad at all. The author even suggested that compared to other superb gunmakers like Hartmann und Weiss the Holland would hold it's value better.

Mehulkamder,
I read the article you posted a while ago and remember it well. Here is what is in the article.
All those test reports has to be taken with a dose of salt - you have to read between the lines. At the end the autor Roland Zeitler resumed under negative:

"Nachteile
defekte Zielfernrohr-Montage / faulty scope mount
überteuert / overpriced"

In detail he said:
"Das erste Schussbild mit fünf Schuss auf 100 Meter betrug noch 37 mm. Ich hatte dabei schon etwas Schwierigkeiten beim Abnehmen und Aufsetzen der Montage. Sie legte sich trotz umgelegten Schwenkriegels erst richtig bei etwas Zug fest. Nachdem ich einige Patronen verschossen hatte, wurde die Montage defekt."

The first target on 100 m with five round circled in 37 mm. I got problems with attaching and disattaching the scope mount ( I am sure he means scope ). She did not close even the lever was closed properly. After I had fired a couple of rounds, the mount went faulty.

"Sicherlich schießt die Waffe hervorragend. Wegen der defekten Montage ist das erste Schussbild mit Vorbehalt zu beurteilen. Der Hinterfuß hatte wohl von vornherein schon zuviel Spiel, sodass die Montage überwiegend durch den Vorderfuß gehalten wurde. Im Endstadium wies die Montage hinten ein Höhenspiel von etwa 3/10 Millimetern auf, was zu großen Treffpunktabweichungen führte."

I am sure that the rifle shoots perfect. But because of the faulty mount the first target has to be taken with care. The rear base had from the beginning to much play (clearance), so that the front base only has to hold the mount in place. At the end the rear mount had an elevation play of 3/10 mm, which leads to large variation of the impact.

Owning a couple of bolt action rifles from Hartmann&Weiss and having handled serveral Holland&Holland bolt action rifles, I can clearly state that none of the H&H come close to the H&W bolt action rifles. Therefor I disagree on the holding value of bolt actions from H&H.

How could any rifle hold its value, if you are not able to hit a barn door with it?

Robert

577Robert,

I would agree with you completely, especially if I were to buy a best bolt rifle - unfortunately, I never will. And hats off to your taste in guns - I have always enjoyed the pictures of the very fine guns that you have been posting here.

My comment was based on Vigillinus' post which was very critical of H&H policies. Sadly, as we all agree, more people would buy guns from H&H to show them off in fancy gun cabinets than use them to hunt with. And this is certain to go on as long as H&H get away with their marketing policies.

Cheers and thanks for your post,
