Calling in Africa
      #50184 - 17/02/06 05:25 PM

I was wondering if there are any instances in Africa where a hunter calls in game, as Jim Corbett did when hunting a tiger in India, or like we do over here for elk? Calling an animal in is a lot more fun than a spot and stalk, and to call in a lion would be thrilling (the use of a recording does not count).

I've used a varmit call for calling Jackals, but with mixed results. In central Africa, the trackers and some PHs call in Duikers. I've also read some stories that when using a varmit call in Lion, and Leopard country, one needs to exercise extreme caution for obvious reasons.

Lions have been called in with a variety of devices used to emulate their roar. I've heard of cone shaped sheet metal, 25 or so litre cans with holes cut in the battom...

It is suposed to be very, very exciting. You might want to take a look at the AR thread on this in African hunting about a week old - probably page 2 or 3 by now.

In Africa I have seen two sorts of calling be used. I have posted it last year on this very forum.

back from the CAR
The fawn cry that is like a fawn moaning to call its mother. This cry is calling the duikers, the bushbuck and sometimes the leopard or any animal
The lion roaring and cough to lure a lion. No doubt this works when lion are around.

As the photo shows, when the lion is deeply asleep, one has to blow very close to his ear.

I would think that the best way to call a lion would be say a goat or deer call.Like in India lions were hunted by tying a goat to a tree and it would bleet thus enticing the lion.Emulating a lion roar may not work.

From my experience, emulating the call of a strange male in another Lions territory works very well indeed........

My PH would call in suni in RSA, as well as red duiker.

In 2000 I took an elk cow call with me to Zim and Tanz. It stopped a herd of sable dead in their tracks in Zimbabwe, and in Tanzania it had lions appearing from nowhere to see what that helpless animal looked like...I had to give the call to a PH after he saw it work in that manner.
