How does the gun feel, how do you like the recoil?
When you "throw it up" how do the sights align?
Does it fit you.

DO YOU LIKE IT?

450No2,

A: I have not shot it offhand yet, so I can't tell you how the recoil feels. Off the bench it feels milder than my 470. I'll let you know that I always use a sand bag when shooting off the bench.

B: The rifle feels pretty good. The weight is in the right place. The barrels are long (26") so it is not supper lively, but not at all clubby.

C: The sights don't line up when I snap the gun up. That is most likely due to the fact I'm shooting it as a lefty. I've begun to practice mounting it in the evening to train my muscle memory. In time I'll learn to compensate for being left handed.

If that stock is cast for a right handed shooter, you can have it bent to fit you, consider that.

Five shot groups?
Is that a photo of a group from one barrel or is it three from the right and two from the left barrle or vice versa?

Typically folks do three, fairly quickly paired shots form right then left barrel, measuring the performance of the gun on the composite group.

Kynoch only comes in 5 cartridge boxes from what I understand, thus the 5 shot group. The Hollis he shot will be shipping to me this weekend, as its my gun...he just did the financing of it.

This is how you buy a Double without your wife knowing about it!

I will consider bending the stock.

The two shots in the X ring are from the left barrel. The three outside are from the right barrel. As colorado said, I opened a $120.00 box of Kynoch ammo and shot all five. I used to shoot six, but the probability of a flyer increases dramaticly. I now shoot a four shot group for record. Once I handload, I expect to improve this group.

There is nothing wrong with that group.

JJ Perodeau at Champlin Arms bent the stock on my 450 No2. He did a great job.

My 450 No2 has 28 inch bbls. I like them. On a big bore double I like at least 26 inch bbls, and actually like 27 and 28 a little better.

I'm quite pleased considering that these barrels were regulated for a 458 Win. Mag AND this is factory ammo, but I do think I can get a sub 2" group by handloading.

"I used to shoot six, but the probability of a flyer increases dramaticly"\

Not to be a statistical smart-ass but the probability of a flyer on the sixth shot is the same as the probability on any of the first five.

Best,

John

I personally only shoot four shots. As that is probably what I would do at most in the heat of the hunt. My groups also aren't so good, which I think is more due to open sights than the rifle. Also due to the less stability of the "rest" ie standing with some support under my left hand. Any more excuses I can find ......

That group would certainly kill a buffalo or a deer. Do you know which shot was which and from which barrel. The four at the bottom look quite consistent ie are the two to the left from one barrel and the two to the right from another? Plus the higher one ?

Only five inches at 100 yards. You will have to shoot it at 100 yards and see how it does.

I will shoot it at 100y once I start hand loading.

The two lefts are from the left and the two rights are from the right. The high one was my first shot from the right barrel.

Now, good group? The guns I build shoot under half an inch. Well that is true for the bolt guns but since I have started building double rifles we have to comprimise that is not a bad group! When working up your hand loads use a cronograph as your rifle was regulated for a given load and velosity. If your velosity is under or over the stated velosity for that cartridge then you are either over pressure or under pressure. With the 450#2 you will want to use a filler for your your loads and I have found foam works great and you do not have to weigh it like you do with other fillers. The .450 # 2 is a great cartridge and you will have a great time with your rifle as I do with the one I built. If I can be of any help with your loading or other wise please feel free to contact me!!!!

Judson,

Thanks! I've been shooting and loading big nitro cartridges for a while. I just got the Kynoch foam wads and prefer them over dacron. I'm pretty confident I can get a 4 shot group in the X ring, buy hand loading.

Hey gang,

Finally got my Jeffery regulated with both barrels (the original and 1960's surplus) 1.5 inches is not to shabby for a 100 year old rifle.
