Hunting roos - easy or difficult?

I was prompted to ask this question by another discussion and suddenly realised my normal argument has holes in it. So I thought I would look for other hunters experiences.

In your actual hunting experiences, have kangaroos been easy or hard to hunt? Note I specify hunt, not spotlight from a vehicle at night.

Does a nice big red roo make a good trophy or not?

Not up to sambar standard but can be quite challenging on foot when they are bedded down in the bush during daylight . Will usually spot you before you see them . Often make the mistake of hopping away and then stopping to look back at you . Otherwise you'll be shooting at a moving target .
Pretty easy if you spot them in the open and can stalk using cover .
I guess a large male skin could be regarded as a trophy of sorts . I had one on my floor for a few months when I was a teenager . Got sick of the roo smell and diced it in the end .

i walk up on them quietly early morn or late arvo and shoot them with the .22 brno at about 50yards the only time i keep skins is if it has an odd colouration all in all i think they are easy to shoot

I agree a vastly different task of sneaking up from cover to roos grazing etc,a roo in the bush can at times be a hit and miss affair if his doe watchdogs are alert to danger.
Of course a lot depends on how hard the roos are hunted as if they are not at all one can nwalk right up to them.

Hunted during the day, as we do in Tassie with dogs and shotguns, they are a real challenge, as they are when stalking with a rifle in the morning and evening which is good practice for the deer seasons. I'm talking about our two species of wallaby in Tasmania here.

My experience has been two fold.

One, where they can be hunted legally under destruction permits, they are quite easy to shoot with a rifle. Even a .22 rimfire. Trying to hunt them with a bow is a different matter. While they might sit at 70 to 100 metres to look back making a quick rifle shot easy, they generally know you are there and never let you into bow range. Unless you take them completely by surprise.

However when hunting pigs a few years ago the landowner told us to shoot some roos for him as well and these roos stayed well out and hopped as soon as they saw a human or vehicle. 300 to 400 metres away and they still turned and hopped away.

I have yet to be able to take a nice red roo AND be able to have its skin at home (ie pest destruction does not allow removing from the property). It would make a nice addition to the trophy room. It is absolutely ludicrous that we can't say buy 5 tags for legally harvestable roos as sporting shooters each year. It would not harm numbers either.

It's a shame that you have to leave them where they drop, a real waste of skins and also some very good meat. In Tassie we use all of the Bennetts and Rufous wallaby that we shoot, either for our own consumption or for dog tucker. It's the same for those lucky hunters in the north and east coast of Tasmania, where on many properties crop protection permits are issued for our Forester Kangaroo, Tasmanias only true Kangaroo, the whole animal can be taken, Foresters are very good eating, many people rather Forester meat instead of our Fallow venison.
