YOUR OPINION ON TROPHIES FREIGHT COSTS
      #49564 - 09/02/06 07:25 AM

I am wondering wether air freight service is more expensive that surface/boat delivery?
I always used Air Service ( Burkina and the CAR are bordering no ocean, Burkina bordering on excessive birthrate, the CAR bordering on madness)and the pricing seem not stiffer that what I was told concerning trophies sailing from Zim or RSA to the US of A.
Your opinion Please.

JB,

I don't remember what the standard air freight cost was in west Africa, but I seem to recall that Air France was quite reasonable compaired to other companies.

We were lucky enough to be in Burkina Faso at the same time as the SIAO convention, and Air France had a special rate then of Euro 2 per kilo for shippment to all destinations in Europe!!! Even with crates/packing etc, it was still cheap!

Do you know how much they want per kilo from CAR nowadays?

Not relevant to West and Central Africa but I know my opinion of the airfreight bill of un-taxidermied trophies (skins, horn, bone) from Africa to Australia is not printable.

I know a guy who paid $4500 to get 2 eland skulls and capes shipped from the French part of Africa to the U.S. What a ripoff!

That's absolutely incredible.........

I'm growing more inclined to leave whatever trophies I take in Africa. The money I save on shipping fees and taxidermy bills is better spent on yet another safari. In many ways, photos make the best trophies, and they're a LOT easier to pay for, manage, find a place for, move, and etc.

$4500!!!

That sounds totally rediculous! And compaired to the price of Euro 2,- per kilo that we paid when shipping from Burkina Faso, that would add up to the same as shipping nearly 2 metric tons! (and there is no way that a couple of skulls and capes weighed that much!).

If that were the case, then I'd leave the skulls and skins behind...

I trust You 500 grains, no doubt. Would it be possible, I would love to know the name of the Thug who did that, it has to be displayed on most of the hunting forums.

I am unsure of what I have paid and I'll look for. Grossly, I cannot imagine that AIR FREIGHT + CUSTOMS FEES + FORWARDER FEES be over 1000 $ for a decent bag.

Grossly : 2 Derby elands skulls+capes + 1 eland hide, 1 lion (hide, skull), 1 hartbeest hide+skull, 2 duikers hide+skull, 3 baboons hide+skull, 1 warthog hide+skull + 1 bushpig hide+skull TOTAL 1905 Euros or under 2400 $.
When I say Hide it's a hide, not a cape.

Can you really leave it behind? That is what I would want to do also.

Freight cost is astonomically high. It is a lot cheaper to export by sea. I recently got a quote for export to Adelaide, airfreight R8000.00 vs seafreight R5300.00. Cost for permits and other things are the same. The savings is significant.

JB unfortuneately exports of trophies cannot be done by sea to France. I found that out when I tried to organize a cheaper rate for Wink. Safari air cargo said it was very difficult to do it, I cannot remember the reason. If you need an answer I can find out the reason

That sounds wierd. Why wouldn'd they be able to ship by sea to France, when I've had trophies shipped by sea via RSA up to Norway? Almost all ships going to Europe go to Rotterdam first, before the contents get distibuted to the other European countries such as France and Norway by smaller ships.

Eric,
I called Kitty at SAC. The problem lies with Rotterdam. They are very anti hunting and make life as difficult as possible for trophies to enter Europe. According to Kitty their last shipment that went by sea was held up for 5 months before it was released. I can vouch that SAC knows their story and they ensure that all the paperwork are 100% before it gets shipped.

Seems to me tha anti's wants to make life difficult for us where ever they get the opportunity.

Jaco,

That's sad news.

If Rotterdam has gone to the anti's, then things really are f¤#ked up when it comes to sea transport to Europe.

Thanks Jaco,

Bad news.
Rotterdam is really the first center in Europe, from where all the shipments are routed to all European countries, mediteranean sea apart.
That means that almost every hunter in North Europe will suffer from this stupid decision, congealed hunting shipments a couple of months.
Count on me to clear that.
Really sad news.

Another company Trax freight told me it is also very difficult to export trophies to the UK directly. Apperently trophies are confiscated. They do their exports to the UK via Luxemborg.

It is freightening how our lives are ruled by administrative prosses that got nothing to do with us.

If the paperwork is done correctly why are the officials making life difficult for us, why don't they just do the jobs they are getting paid for.

All this redtape and bullsh*t makes me sick

After reading the above posts, I think I have the dubious distinction of "Holding the black feather", meaning I got screwed more than anyone else.
We elected to have our taxidermy done in Namibia because the quality looked Ok to us and the price was much lower than in Alaska.
Shoulder mounts
2 Kudu
2 Oryx
1 Hartebeest
1 Springbok
1 Warthog
1 Duiker
1 Steenbok

Skull mounts
1 Warthog
1 Hartebeest

Backskins
1 Springbok.
Total cost for shipping, insurance and paperwork
$5119USD
There's more to the story, which I will relate at a later date.
Pictures look better to me all the time.
