The Return of the 400 Jeffery?

Had a nice conversation with Craig Boddington at the Houston Safari Club Convention. While discussing the 450/400 3 double he used to own, he told 400NitroExpress and I that, there were serious talks, about Ruger building a #1 in 400 Jeffery. Hornady would load the ammo.
He thought the caliber would be .408 or .409.

I would be nice to see this 400 Jeffery project come to fruition!

A return to common sense! Good power level, manageable gun weight, comfortable shooting. Yes please!

Even better in .411 though! WJ will be rolling over in his grave at the thought of his 3-inch cartridge being revived with the 'old' bullet diameter!

If it happens, I would surely like to see it reintroduced with the .411" groove diameter.

I would hazzard a guess that they go with .408 or .409 so their ammo would be safe in any 400 Jeffery double.

If that happens then we need some of the modern double makers (one or two do already of course) to add it to their range as well.

Sounds like a great idea.

That would be great if Ruger actually did it and in a somewhat timely manner. I definitely believe I would be getting a No 1. I have been seriously considering doing precisely that to a 405 Win chambered No 1 for sometime now.

BobC exchanged emails with Hornady this week. They asked him if he wanted to wait on his "custom" die order for his 450/400 3 inch? They told him it would be a few months, however they were coming out with 450/400 3 inch loaded ammo, brass and bullets.

I presume these will be .411. They will make dies for .408. I can only hope they will produce bullets as well?

That would be a good thing. If all of this comes to pass, maybe we'll FINALLY have some standardized SAAMI specs for this cartridge........

But I have a question: Aren't we talking about the 404 Jeffery?

Nah, this is the .400 Jeffery, the flanged shell. Why would they screw around with the .404? It's rimless - pretty worthless for DG.
