Model 70 Safari Express gunsmith?
      #49152 - 04/02/06 01:53 PM

Howdy,

New to the forums, but just bought the last .375H&H Winchester Safari Express Model 70 that Cabelas had in stock. So I was wondering if I could join the fire?

Here's my first question...

I've read a few old posts and it seems folks here recommend having a good riflesmith perform a "Reliability Tune-Up" on a factory rifle before hunting dangerous game. I was in the my dealer's store today looking at the rifle (I'll be able to take it home in a few days) and wanted to install a front sight I had, in place of the factory bead sight. Five taps with a brass punch to the dovetail of the front sight and the front pedastal fell off of the end of the barrel. The rear screw was lost behind the work bench after the second tap (It appears the screw was only hanging on by literally a single thread. The front screw was loose and snapped off clean with the barrel on the fifth tap. I wasn't impressed (especially since I didn't hit the sight that hard). Not a good way to start a new relationship, especially with a "Classic".

Here's what I want to do, I want the front and rear sight pedestals silver soldered onto the barrel so this doesn't happen again. I contacted one of the Winchester repair centers and they said they'd make the repairs, but since it has to go to a shop now anyway, are there any smiths you recommend for the reliability work?

All suggestions appreciated!!!

Thanks and Take Care,

Mike

I have my work done by Mark Penrod. Excellent work resonable prices, good turn around time. I think that you 'll find others here who will reccomend him as well.

Thanks guys!!! I found a gunsmith that doesn't like to advertise his bolt work, but who is very well known in other circles. He's worked on some of my other rifles, so I'm VERY cofident I'll be happy. By the way the conversation went, I'm pretty sure he doesn't want his name posted since I'm positive his plate is full with the stuff he specializes in. I'll see if he'll let me mention the work after the rifle comes back. Thanks Again!

Mike

p.s.: I hope this thread helped others locate one of the above gunsmiths as well!

Rusty -- after much procrastination I finally got the Whitworth off to Mr. Burns. In theory it will arrive at his shop tomorrow.

Thanks again for his contact information.

Charles, Tip has worked on my Whitworth, putting on a 2 pos safety and replacing trigger. He did great work. Tip directed me to John Valicek nearby to shorten my stock, put on a real ebony tip and fill in the slot in the stock left by replacing the trigger safety. Both do superb work. Bob
