He certainly does look - Quite Elk-like in the top photo's, doesn't he. Quite Regal, even for a middle-aged one, judging by the antlers, but hey do angle back like an elk's. With nothing to judge against, he could be 250 to 650lbs. In the closeup, his face looks like a Prairie Mule Deer. I had thought the Sambur had a face more like an Elk. Looks like the saddle (back line) of an older animal.
: Thanks NitoX.

could go up to 28 with his head forward and antlers laid back a little,i also think due to the distance the actual ends of his mains are not shown in the pic thus shortening him a little, yep 28",weak tops and brows but who gives a rats i would have bowled him over if he was looking at me like that from a glade in Vic and i bloody well bet Hahny you were hankering for one your rifles mate.

John a q`s for you would you have a crack at him with your double off the shoulder at that 300 yard mark? (if allowed)

My guess was around 22" but when actually looking at it in the field I would have thought around 30". But it was a long way away and all I did was take some photos. It did look very large.

Gryph

At the moment I would have trouble hitting it anywhere with a double. Never tried a shot that far yet, even on paper.

With my .30-06, yes.

I'm with you Alan- when I look at an ungulate, I think of roasts, steaks, stew, burger and sausage. Size, to me, is how many pounds live as well as cut and wrapped.

DarylS: I used to think that way but I would rather harvest a yearling than a grand daddy when filling the freezer. I primarily hunt for trophy now, though still take all the meat.

NitroX: in the first picture he is 1/2", second 1 1/8", and the last 5".

I was today informed that the pic of the sambar was taken in North Eastern India in a national park, which is a bloody long way from water valley.
I was under the impression that the sambar was extinct in India, however I am pleased to see that it is not.
Thanks for the heads up.

Alan

It was a bit tricky of course as I did post the photo in the South Pacific/Aust hunting forum.

Just a photo for the sambar enthusiasts (fanatics).

Sambar are definitely not extinct in India, though I don't know their numbers. But as a guide we were told there were about 25,000 or 30,000 chital deer in Kanha National Park. Sambar would be a lot lesser in number. And if you add up how many beasts a tiger needs in a year and if there are up to 350 tigers in the park (per their censuses), they would be eating the natural increase. Plus preying on the gaur, barasingha, nilgai, sambar, pigs etc. Helped also by the resident leopard population.

Saw a ripper of a good sambar stag but he was off too quickly to get a photo off. Could have shot him though .

Talking about leopards we were told they found leopard tracks right next to our hotel / resort one of the mornings were stayed there. Another good reason to carry a torch when heading off to our tents.

I thought the stag had quite a lot of bulk to it. In the field there was no doubting it was a stag instantly. I think a broadside view would show it is quite heavy.
