Whitworth Questions
      #48832 - 01/02/06 11:10 PM

Anyone own one of the Original Whitworth Express rifles that were put together in Manchester England?
If possible I would like to know what British proof marks are on these particular rifles.
Also what number if any is stamped on the right side of the receiver bridge. (near the threaded screw holes for peep sight mounting)

Also does anyone have any factual info on what year the Manchester Whitworth Express rifles ceased production/assembley and the US versions started?

TIA for any info forthcoming.

Click here. You may have to click the images and then select "original" for the image size. If these do not work I can try to take some this weekend with natural light.

If you need a zoomed version and can't view the original beacuse the download is too slow, let me know. If there is something I missed that you need, let me know.

The pictures are pretty bad -- nothing like using a flash in a dark room with one hand for the camera to make a mess.

Charles,
Wow, thanks for those photos, they're great!
Now if I could just trouble you for a couple of other details.
Is there a small stamped number on the REAR bridge on the right side near the threaded holes and if so what is it?

Also, on that Whitty in the photos, are the foresight ramp and rearsight island attached by screws or are they soldered or brazed?

Are there any proofs stamped on the underside of the barrel?

Sorry for all these questions but I am doing a bit of research on these rifles and am trying to learn more about them.
I've seen quite a few different versions of the Whitworth Express and am trying to find out which were British assembley and which are not.
Thanks again Charles.

Charles, you must have the heart of an artist, because it's been said that they tend to be their own worst critic.

Got the wrong bridge, did I? There is something there but I will have to drag it out again for a better look. It may be a little while before I can do that.

I'll take a closer look and let you know what it looks like.

I did not see anything else unless it is under the stock. I'll look but I won't take it apart -- I am all thumbs and that would be a bad move.

Yes, I do -- in a jar of formaldehyde on my desk...

Can anyone describe the difference between a Pommie Whitworth and a US Whitworth?
Is there any distinctive thing/things that show which is which?

I have added pictures of this area to the gallery.

Both are screwed -- pictures added.

I did not see any but did not remove the stock.

The U.S. imports will be marked as such. You can see the Alexandria, Virginia import mark in my pictures. That may not be your question.

Try to get hold of Dugaboy1/MacD37 as he seems to have a fair bit of Whitworth lore.

Charles,
Thanks again for the top effort!
It's good to compare the markings etc on your rifle compared to mine.

My pleasure -- always happy to do my part in the name of education. Besides, the rifle was getting tired of the safe and wanted some fresh air!

Bad news. I was supposed to have my Whitworth and the new reloads for it, back in my hands yesterday, but we were hit with a major snow storm, and my friend couldn't make the trip. I don't know when I'll get it back, hopefully in a week or two. As soon as I get it, I'll take some photos and get them to you. Sorry for the delay.

Some good information is coming forward regarding these Whitworth Express Rifles thanks to those who have responded both here and by email.
Will do a report on this some time in the future.
Be prepared for some surprises!

I'm still chasing information on Whitworth Rifles chambered for 7mm Mag.
Does anyone have one of these?
