Albino animals in Africa

Have any of you seen, or had the opportunity to hunt an albino animal while in Africa? I don't recall seeing an albino wild animal in Africa myself. Although I've heard of albino lions. And then you have the white blesbok, but I'm not sure if they would come under the term albino.

An albino shoulder mount, or even full body mount of an albino antilope would be quite unusual and interesting in my opinion.

If you had the chance to shoot an albino buffalo or antilope, would you shoot it even if the horns were mediocre, or even small?

One of the areas I hunt in the Selous has a lot of albino baboons and I'd dearly like to nail one for myself but for some reason all the albinos seem to be female...... maybe someone out there could tell us if that's possible? - maybe I just haven't seen the albino males.

I've also seen albinoism in a few other species as well and I remember seeing a photo of an albino zebra a little while ago.

I personally wouldn't take an albino of any other species just because it was there...... but every time I see one of those white baboons, I just get this urge to squeeze the trigger on one!

There is a picture of an albino Bongo on the Hunting Reports website. Now that would be a cool trophy. Part of the reason there are so few albino animals is they lack natural camoflage. In fact they are much easier to see so fall to predators more frequently.

Often albinism can be a fatal gene. In groups of animals where one would only see female albinos probably means it is a fatal gene in males.

If I remember correctly if both parents in certain species are albino the young do not survive. I think this occurs in horses. Albinism is a recessive gene.

The photos below may be an albino zebra foal from Kenya. It's hard to see if the eyes are pink on it.





Albinos aren't necessarily all white either. Albinism is just the lack of black pigment cells. I've seen some reddish colored blue wildebeest that were probably albinos. They look reddish, probably closer to pink, due to the lack of black pigment. These were captive and part of some farmer's breeding program.



Some reptile breeders go wild with this stuff and you'll see some pretty odd colored frogs and pythons, yellow ones, white ones, etc. But they have no pigment in their eye (they are pink) and are thus albinos.

I saw an albino western diamondback rattlesnake here in Texas once, but that's about all.

Anyone else?

(Albino or piebald will do for this discussion)

What about melanistic (black), xanthic (gold) or leucistic (another form of white)

I saw a melanistic crested pigeon, that was pretty neat. It would show up from time to time but after a couple months i never saw it again. Probably just moved on.

Had an albino raven at the house last week. Got a couple pics of it but they are not very good.

According to the French tradition, should you shoot an albino game, you're due to die in the coming year???

In our place, we have an albino doe hind. So far nobody (even the neighbors) dares to shoot her. Personnally, I am very pleased to sometimes see her and I wish it can last.

It's illegal to shoot albino or melanistic deer in my state-I don't agree with the law. They're protected because they're rare and pretty, but albinism is a recessive genetic defect. A minor defect, but a defect all the same. It surfaces most commonly as a result of inbreeding, so it's not an indicator of a healthy herd. If I was in a legal state I'd shoot an albino deer in a heartbeat and take my chances with superstition.
