LOP on Doubles
      #48533 - 30/01/06 10:21 AM

I'm not much of a double guy, and don't understand why it is that the LOP for a double needs to be, or should be, longer than for a single barreled weapon.

I understand that this is thought to be true for both rifles and shotguns, and especially for shotguns.

I like a 14.25" LOP on a rifle. I have tried double rifles and shotguns with LOPs as long as 15.5" and find anything over 14.5" to be too long. They are slow for me to mount--I actually have to think about it far too much for comfort--probably because I find that it's too easy to snag the butt of the weapon on my clothing while bringing it up to my shoulder.

Can anyone shed any light on why LOP is supposed to be longer for doubles?

LOP is measured from the front trigger on doubles.

I don't know why it would either. I have not worried so much about what the lop is but how it feels when mounting it.

I want to get a good grip on the wrist, have my finger resting on the front trigger without stretching, a distance from my right thumb to my nose that is safe and not have to scrunch or stretch my neck to 'feel' comfortable.

This can be anything from 13.75 to 14.75".

I find that I like my bolt rifles to have 14 5/8" LOP. this works pretty well for me all round, scope or express sights.

I want my doubles at 15". This is the LOP that I prefer for my shotguns and the double rifles should fit the same,

The short answer regarding why LOP is longer on doubles is "because it can be". I once read a stockmaker assert that LOP is shorter on bolt guns because a longer one makes scope use all but impossible due to a lack of eye relief. Makes a bit of sense. Also, one definitely wants a longer LOP on heavy recoiling rifles like doubles to keep from being bopped in the nose.

What makes this discussion really interesting is that it's a fact that people were smaller 50-100 years ago (ever look at old photos or try to buy WWI or WWII surplus clothing?) yet we still see 14-15" LOP doubles from that era. It's quite possible that early African hunters would be amazed that today's guys are choosing rifles stocked so SHORT at 14.5".

John

JTG,

You are on to something there.

Also, the longer the stosk, the less apparent recoil.

The most important thing is that it fits you.
If it is too long you can not mount it
quickly and cleanly. Have a qualified
fitter check what is correct for you.
Consider one who can implement
the changes suggested. Some fitters
just tell you what dimensions to have
the rifle or gun changed to. Then are
out of the picture.
