Black Rhino Hunting and Numbers
      #48351 - 29/01/06 12:13 AM

At the Dallas show, I saw a booth that was advertising the rates for Black Rhino. $20,000 for a dart hunt or $150,000 trophy fee. They had two big pictures posted.

The one that appeared to be shot was by a lady and the other one appeared to be dart hunted was by a man. The one that was "shot" had his eyes open and it looked like two bullet holes to the head. The one that was "dart" hunted just looked like he was asleep.

I didn't get a chance to speak with them, but I was wondering if anyone knew who the lady might be.

These numbers are from the International Rhino Foundation

Southwestern Black Rhino ~ 1310
Northwestern Black Rhino ~ 5+?
Eastern Black Rhino ~ 520
Southern Black Rhino ~1,770
TOTAL BLACK RHINO ~3,610

Longbob, I sent you a PM a couple of days ago. Look up to the left of the Admin tab, and if you've got a blinking icon, click on it to open the PM. Thanks.

No problem. Regarding the Black Rhino, they're way, way, way out of my price range.

Even though they probably will always be outside of my price range, it is good to see hunting has restarted out of hopefully sustainable herds. Giving value to the black rhino ensures its future survival.

Sorry can't help on the woman's identity. Did hear something about it some time ago.

In 1993 I was in Namibia, at Jan Oelofse's Mt. Etjo Lodge. While there, five Black Rhino, a bull, 2 cows, and a calf, were brought into Mt. Etjo Lodge property for relocation from one of the tribal conservancies to protect them from poaching. This was the first time that Black Rhino had been relocated to private property in Namibia. They were placed in an enclosure so the veterinarian could make sure they were healthy. While they were in the enclosure, I was fortunate to get a real close view of the. What magnificient animals! I'm happy to say that when I was back to visit Jan 5 years ago, the Black Rhino there were doing well, and there had been a couple of calves born.

Supply and demand is an amazing phenomenon, isn't it?

The fact that any sort of hunting is allowed for black rhino indicates that it's on the road to recovery, albeit a slow recovery.

Mike, I remember a black rhino at Jan's that was kept in an enclosure. One of the staff members love to stand outside the fence and tease and goad that poor rhino to no end. Finally having enough of that nonsense, the rhino charge him, turning just in time to avoid hitting the fence. I was amazed at its speed and agility.........

You're spot on about their quickness. One day while out hunting with Steve Tors at Jan's, we were in Steve's little Suzuki and we stopped to take a few photos of some Elephants. The Elephants finally moved off, and just then a Black Rhino bull charged the car from perhaps 50 yards away. The first two times that Steve turned the ignition key, there was no response. Finally, on the third try, it started up, and we took off. In the few seconds it took Steve to get the vehicle started, the Rhino had covered most of the ground between us. Of course you know what Steve said later: "that was some action, eh?"

I read a report on a Blackie dart hunt and it sounded very exciting. The PH said it was much more challenging then a rifle hunt.

I would like to dart hunt one. It is my understanding that they will take several measurements for the taxidermist that will then replicate the rhino in fiberglass. The mounts are said to be tough to distinguish from an acutal mount.

The closest I came to one was about 3 feet. We were in a open top game car and spotted one. I had pictures that I kept taking up until the last moment of his charge. Luckily it stopped.

I was never nervous. Mainly out of sheer stupidity and the fact that I was lauging at my buddy that caused the charge. Evidently, Black Rhinos get real agitated at excessive movement.

My buddy was trying to climb over the seats to get to the back where I was in order to get better pictures. The rhino didn't like that and came at full charge. He was straddling one of the seats when the PH yelled at him (under his breath)to stop moving! My buddy stopped, the rhino stopped, then my buddies camera went into full rewind (gotta get him a digital).

That was the funny part to me . It was like high noon at the OK Corral. The noise from the clock going "Gong! Gong! Gong!" and just waiting for something to make the next move.

From what I've been told, Black Rhinos are born pissed off, and then they just get nastier as they get older.
