Of all the PHs in Africa, that you've either hunted with, read about, or heard about, who stands out as the top one or two, in your opinion, and why.
Now, I'm not talking about some of the legendary hunters who've had lots of stories written about them like Bell, and some others, but true PHs who actually made guiding hunters their vocation.

Well, hello George! Nice to see you here. Did you get the photos I emailed to you a couple days back?
PVT eh? Congratulations. It's been a long time, but you succeeded in getting me to laugh so hard I had hot coffee come out my nose. I'll get you back later this year on our duck hunting trip.
Back to the subject of top PHs, I really would have liked to hunt with Robin Hurt, John Kingsley Heath and Wally Johnson. Ah, to dream.......

Another PH just came to mind. He hunts a great deal in Botswana (or at least he used to) Johan Calitz. Has anyone here hunted with him, or any of the above mentioned PHs?

I have talked to Mr. Calitz and it's obvious that he is a walker. Someone told me he has a tv show, but I don't get cable or satellite tv, so I am not able to confirm that.
Personally I think there are a LOT of great PHs in Africa, and quite a few who are not so great.
Some that I would definitely hunt with:
Tony Sanchez Arino Peter Barnard Johan Calitz Buzz Charlton Vaughn Fulton Don Heath (part time PH, as he works for African Hunter magazine too) Thiery LaBatt Myles McCallum John Sharpe Richard Tabor Guy Whittall Peter Wood

Here are some stand-out PHs that I've hunted with:
John Sharp
Steve Tors (Jan Oelofse Safaris)
Mike Curry (Gerry Kelly Safaris)
Mark Sullivan
All of these guys have gone way above and beyond the call of duty for me, and have been total, consumate professionals in every way. I'd glady hunt with any one of them again.

I was fortunate to have hunted with Steve Tors twice, including my first Safari in August, 1993. He truly is special.
One other PH I'd like to add to this list is Vaughan Fulton, a true Professional.

I can declare myself in favour of the French PHs working in Africa. I am quoting PH who are Outfitters too.
Alain LEFOL in Chad and CAR, a legend, he accomodated Mellon and is courtshipped by many VIPs.
Pierre Guerrini in Cameroon, he is the Americans'favourite and accomodates the Cabelas family every year.
Eric Pasanisi in Tanzania, is accomodating royalties and Middle East Emirs.
J Michel and Jerome Latrive in Tanzania, they are models of efficiency and almost always full booked.

Folks
Personally I think a guy can only say a PH is great if he has personally hunted with him. I really don't care if a PH has on his own shot a ton of game if he is an arse to be around. A great PH today has to be a well rounded guy that most of all is a people person as well as a talented hunter.
Some of the most recognized PH's are completely full of shit and could not have done what they say they did in their lifetime. Yes! I have a reason for saying that and I just didn't extract that comment from the atrmosphere.
Personally I think Garry Kelly and a guy nobody ever heard of Arthur Taylor have to be some of the best on the continent.

I would also have to nominate Mike Murray. While I have only hunted PG with him and not hunted DG(something that I will rectify next year as we have an appointment with a tusker), I feel I can still safely say he is an excellent PH. Although not widely known he is extremely well thought of in the industry and I even had an outfitter tell me he thought he was the best in Africa at the moment. And no he did not book for him or have any financial ties to him either. I highly reccomend that anyone interested in Botswana(especilly Elephant) contact him for info.

Mark, I'd like to hear about Arthur Taylor.
Since you mentioned Gerry Kelly, I predict that his young PH, Mike Curry, will go down as one of the all-time greats. Mike has to be one of the most talented, well-educated, affable men I've ever hunted with.

I personally think Garry Kelly has an amazing bunch of young men working with him. They all seem to be very well rounded. Mike who you hunted with had a group while I was on Bonwa Phala comprised of older grandparents and 2 grandchilren under 10. He took the whole thing in stride and the group just loved him. Garry's son Shawn is now working with our Bundu safaris in Tanzania and we are very glad to have him.
Arhtur Taylor started off hunting as Jeff Wainwright's apprentice and learned some excellent cat techniques from him. He worked with Cotton Gordon who actually shot a leopard off him that Cotton's wife had wounded. He also successfully guided some of the last rhino safaris in Zambia.
The guy just had vast experience all over Zambia but had no ego problems at all. He treated everybody the same and his crew loved him. He was a laugh a minute and a tireles PH and a diamond in the rough if there ever was one.
I wasn't completely truthful about Arthur. He is known by some people and he was featured in Dr. Newberry's book "THE BIG FIVE".
Unfortunately Arthur has 2 daughters in school in the UK now and has found that employment in other areas other than hunting pays the bills better.
I feel privileged to have done his last Classic safari with him. We had 34 wonderful days with Arthur and got all our animals and the qulaity I expected plus some great fishing on the Zambesi.
Regards,
Mark
